So since the DLC will continue beyond the fighter pass, is there a chance that Assist Trophy characters like Waluigi or Isaac may be Promoted to Playable?

I would say almost 100% no.

Possibly. They'd have to contend with the Assist Trophy version still being there since I don't think they'll just remove it (after all, Sakurai didn't bother removing Chrom from Robin's Final Smash), but there's ways around it like giving the playable version a different visual appearance (i.e. Assist Trophy Waluigi has the purple overalls, while playable Waluigi has his tennis uniform from Mario Tennis Aces).

At this point I'd settle for a promoted Spirit.

That's better...Assist Trophies at least have a more prominent function.

I would also agree with "promoted" spirits, because a lot of characters that could be interesting got dumped off there instead.

Another Assist Trophy that I think could easily be Promoted to Playable: Akira Yuki.

His Assist Trophy uses his old, blocky, Virtua Fighter 1 model. If they make him playable, they could just use his more smooth appearances from later games.

If the character pass was the only DLC coming out, then I'd say no about promoting ATs, but with the announcement of more DLC, I think there's a possibility.

To be honest, I’ll say no assist trophies will be made playable either when Sakurai explicitly says so, or the DLC comes to an end without it happening. I don’t think there’s reason to assume there’s an arbitrary rule saying it won’t occur.

You know, it's funny how Sakurai made a big deal about Grant Kirkhope being the first Western composer he's worked with, considering he then revealed not 20 minutes later that Toby Fox was the second Western composer he's worked with.

I won’t say it’s impossible, but they seem less likely. Maybe it’s my imagination, but Sakurai seems to think that being an AT is “close enough” in terms of a character’s representation.

These are all characters who were previously Assist Trophies in Brawl and Smash 4, but are now absent in Ultimate (or are still in the game but in a different form like Spirits and Mii Fighter costumes). Any chance any of these characters could be future Ultimate DLC?

I'd say the distinction between Toby Fox and Grant Kirkhope, in this instance, is that the former was actually in Japan.

It's also not some special honor any more. The first guest character was a huge deal but now than we're onto like the 15th who cares.

If the 5th fighter is 3rd party, then that will be the 15th guest character.

Given there are so many of them, is there even much point in calling them guests anymore?

I keep trying to convince people that classic Ganon would be a cool new addition to Smash but no one wants to hear it.

He and Dixie Kong are my two most-wanted characters now. As of September 4th, every single character I've ever wanted in Smash has made it, except for those two.

To be fair, if Ganon were to be a character then that does sort of perpetuate the whole "There are only three Zelda characters" thing.

Not that I really mind. Tetra is my most wanted Zelda character.

That's funny. If I could choose another Zelda character to add after Ganon, it would definitely be Tetra.

But anyway, Ganon (or Tetra) don't have to be the last Zelda character we ever get. It's not like there's a cap on how many characters each series can have. I just think Ganon would be a great new fighter, and we don't have any pre-Ocarina representation yet.

When there are also 60 Nintendo characters, and not more than three characters from any one other company, yes, they are still guests.

Also that...most all of them won't come back.
