Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

I'm guessing we pm them to inform them to split it? I and Telcontar both already pm'd Superslinger2007 but he never actually split his page... . Would it be okay to just split it now?

"Learning without thinking is labor lost. Thinking without learning is dangerous."I'm going to do Characters.Americas Next Top Model.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI'm doing Hayate The Combat Butler,Family Guy,Renamed Tropes and Smug Snake.
"Learning without thinking is labor lost. Thinking without learning is dangerous."I'll cutlist Superslinger2007, since he is not responding to PM's.

Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyI gave a couple of suggestions for where to move stuff; he replied and acknowledged that his page needed splitting and all, but no moving has happened.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.I'm gonna split Early-Installment Weirdness, Dragon Age, Turn of the Millennium, Tempting Fate and Does This Remind You of Anything?.

"Learning without thinking is labor lost. Thinking without learning is dangerous."Is TearJerker.Music becoming a problem, yet? Periodically, I'll split some of the entries onto their own TearJerker/ pages or onto one of the genre sub-categories - but this is too big for me to handle by myself.
I'm only counting about 136,000 characters on the source page, so I don't think it's an issue. Remember that 500,000 is the bad number.
(Thank you MS Word and character count.)
Not sure how much additional markup there is outside the source code, which may push it up some amount.

TearJerker.Music has 228,114 characters*, so it's getting big but not big enough to absolutely require splitting.
Dark Confidant, if you look in the bottom left corner of a page, there's two numbers. The top one is the character count for the page. It's a lot easier to use that than Word.

Learn something new every day. Never saw that number.
-feels dumb- Well, thanks. Now I know.

Don't feel dumb. It's not like it explains what it is. I only know because someone, at some point, told me.
Well, thanks anyway. I do appreciate it.
I'm going to try to do The Legend of Zelda, since it's getting painfully close to 500K and no one's done it yet.
Would it be acceptable if I can only knock off WMG.The Legend Of Zelda to the 350,000 range?
I've spun off three pages already to try to ease some of the main page's burden, and I can probably do a couple more, but I don't think I'll be able to get below 350,000 without just hard-splitting the page.
edited 13th May '12 6:48:16 PM by DarkConfidant
Alright. I've got The Legend of Zelda down to 361,000 characters by making four spin-off pages, which makes it large but not in immediate danger of system collapse. If you'd like me to just hard-split the rest of the page into 'unsorted 1' and 'unsorted 2', I'll do so.
That would probably be a good idea, considering 400,000 characters is about when things start going wonky.
Alright. Split the page again into two pages:
The Legend of Zelda (About 230,000 characters)
The Legend of Zelda: Additional WMG (About 130,000 characters)
Made notes on the index page and on the main page that this was by special administrative request with instructions not to split other pages without checking character counts and going through this thread.

It looks like Superslinger2007 fixed his page.
I'm doing Network Decay and Characters.Bleach Two.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI'm splitting Kamen Rider Fourze, Series.Castle,Characters.Thundercats2011,SugarWiki.Superlative Dubbing and WMG.Avatar The Last Airbender.

"Learning without thinking is labor lost. Thinking without learning is dangerous."TearJerker.Music had been a problem in the past, so I'm keeping a watch on that. As long as we're not even at 250,000, though - I guess we're fine.
WMG.My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic Setting is done. I'll split Characters.Star Wars The Old Republic and A To H next.

"Learning without thinking is labor lost. Thinking without learning is dangerous."Hi all! Okay, I am completely new to this very thread and I am going to raise up one concern. This page: AwesomeMusic.Vocaloid is just too big on its own right to be kept that way. So mind if anybody help me to split it up into like this: Kamen Rider Fourze ? Thanks in advance.

How do we deal with troper pages on the list?
