Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning
Edited by kory on Dec 18th 2023 at 2:36:21 AM
Both Awesome. One Piece New World Era and Funny. One Piece New World Era are growing tremendously, Awesome. One Piece New World Era is at 320k bytes and Funny. One Piece New World Era is at 270k bytes. Any need to split now or wait for the too long warning for both of them?
Edited by kuchiki222 on Jan 8th 2023 at 11:27:46 AM
Convenient that the page has sections for easy splitting. Maybe put characters on a new page.
I'd wait for the warning. Move some of the arcs (at some point that makes sense to you)?
Memes.Video Games is triggering the warning. I only looked at the properly formatted examples, but it looks like the top-level bullet point that would make the biggest dent is The King of Fighters, and when I save that content and look at the size of the resulting HTML file it comes out to 78 KB, which feels a little low to me. But by the nature of the page it doesn't seem like there's much room to clean anything up.
Music of the 2010s triggers the warning; ironically, this is just after the subpages in Anime and Manga of the 2010s were re-merged. The most reasonable measure I can think of is splitting the pages alphabetically by artist, with the original page including an index and the genres folder.
Be kind. Why does it have news updates on music genres anyway? That's something more for Useful Notes.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupIn that case, would it be best to remove the genres folder and see if that changes anything, or is it better to split the page by artist?

Be kind.I would definitely remove the genres folder; I'd do it myself but I don't know if the people working on the page would rather preserve it somewhere else.
Removed the genre folder, citing this thread, and the warning's gone.
Be kind. The other decade pages have similar folders. Should those be removed as well?
Probably. That stuff should probably go on a separate page from the indices unless it's more common on those [medium] of the [decade] indices outside music than I think.
VideoGame.Overwatch has hit the too long warning again.
The tropes need to be split by pages in this case.
Characters.Cookie Run Epic Cookies has hit the too long warning. How do we split this page up? The folders are divided by seasons, and there are 7 of them so far.
THE GOLDEN AGE WILL RETURN AGAIN!Hello, and apologies if it's been asked & answered but are there specific guides for how long pages should be? I'm aware of the 400k-500k warning/limit yet unsure if a specified # before creating sub-pages exists.
Specifically, I'm wondering if I should make a sub-page for I'm In Love With the Villainess's MCs b/c it's at 98,536 chars and may exceed 100k before I've finished w/it.
Thanks in advance!
Characters.Triangle Strategy has a long page warning now.
She/Her | Currently cleaning N/AThere's no hard-and-fast rules but creating subpages just as a "badge of honor" is frowned upon, and I think most people here would say as long as the main page isn't triggering the warning there's no reason to create subpages. That said, if a potential subpage is over 100k it's not going to be cut either.
Thanks, and at the risk of sounding holier-than-thou I certainly wouldn't create BOH content as less people would read them; It certainly won't come near 400k.
While I'm here, is there a guideline for "Tropes A-F", etc., folders? I doubt I Favor the Villainess needs them, but it'd be nice to know regardless.
There's no set guideline AFAIK, it's mainly "go with what feels right for the groupings".
I see. Thank you.
Characters.Pokemon Diamond And Pearl is giving the warning.
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.Awesome.My Hero Academia has hit the too long warning.
THE GOLDEN AGE WILL RETURN AGAIN!Characters.Super Mario Bros Allies is showing the warning. Best plan is splitting the section about the princesses into their own page. Perhaps Characters.Super Mario Bros Princesses would fare?
EDIT: Someone already beat me to the punch on splitting the page. The new page is at Characters.Super Mario Bros The Princesses.

Life is just a dream.I would support that.
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300^^ Sounds fine to me.
Re:Pokémon Diamond and Pearl — I was thinking about splitting off the gym leaders and the elite four to their own character page. Would that work.

Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.
Headscratchers.Star Trek The Next Generation is displaying the warning.
