YMMV / Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Notably, in the Latin Spanish dub of the film, when Wendy tells Shen that his dialogue is getting too "Star Wars-y" for her, she calls him "Yoda" and tells him that in case he doesn't know, Star Wars has already ended, given that Revenge of the Sith was released one year before and was initially announced as the last Star Wars film... until Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 and the Sequel Trilogy premiered in 2015 with the release of The Force Awakens.
    • This wouldn't be the last time Brenda Song played a typical Asian-American teenage girl with two best friends who develops powers and becomes a warrior. She even has to fight an Alpha Bitch and her best friend in both (though in Amphibia 's case, they're one and the same).
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Anna Hutchison, who plays one of Wendy's friends, would go on to play Yellow Ranger Lily Chillman in Power Rangers Jungle Fury, another work with Animal-Themed Fighting Style (particularly hilarious since Wendy's other friend had previously played a Power Ranger as well).
    • James Gaylyn, though having some guest and voice roles under his belt in Power Rangers (most notably Zeltrax in Dino Thunder), would later play Colonel Mason Truman in RPM and Beast Morphers.
    • Justin Chon would later play Eric Yorkie in the ''Twilight'" films.
  • Spiritual Successor: The film can be seen as a Setting Update live-action reimagining of Mulan, especially that Wendy and Shen are modern day expies of Mulan and Shang. On a less charitable note, in light of the 2020 film's tepid reception, it can also be seen as the closest thing (at least in the western world) to a good live action Mulan movie, period.
  • Tear Jerker: While not delved into, it's implied that Wendy and Shen's original incarnations were close and may have even had a romantic relationship. Sadly, nothing came of it since Shen was always fated to die in battle against Yan-lo.
