YMMV / Vangelis

Go To

  • Archive Panic: Vangelis' official discography isn't exactly small. This man churned out enough music to fill two or three albums per month for decades. Good luck finding and listening to all of that.
  • Funny Moments: Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London 'helping' to perform the music of Chariots of Fire.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • In Germany (which has got its own vast Electronic Music scene that usually overshadows all imports), "Conquest Of Paradise", the single release from the 1492: Conquest of Paradise soundtrack, became a huge hit—not for its sound, though, and even less due to the film, but it was chosen by the boxer Henry Maske as his personal theme tune. In fact, most Germans only know this one piece of music by Vangelis, and it was a common occurrence at CD stores for customers to ask the clerks for "that Henry Maske song".
    • In Canada, the Jon and Vangelis album The Friends of Mr. Cairo peaked at #2 for three weeks and ended up being 15th overall on the Year End chart. The title track was a #1 single.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • "Suffocation", a nine minute long Kraftwerk-esque piece from the album See You Later inspired by the Seveso disaster. With the frantic synth brass and megaphone announcements in the first half and eerie low notes in the second half, it perfectly captures the feeling of being witness to a horrific industrial accident. Even the name of the piece is terrifying!
    • The title track from Invisible Connections is a dark and spooky piece, full of ominous, echo-laden, heavily treated percussion sounds. It has an extremely unsettling aura even though it could be classified as being essentially ambient in nature. The rest of the album is pretty much more of the same, mixing acoustics with electronics in order to produce a dreary, almost purely ambient soundscape.
    • Many of the artist's more experimental tracks qualify, including parts of Hypothesis and Beaubourg, due to all the weird and unnerving sounds they contain.
    • The instances of Drone of Dread in his soundtrack for the documentary De Nuremberg à Nuremberg, which give a whole new meaning to War Is Hell.
    • The opening theme from The Bounty, taken out of context, could very well be the most beautiful slasher theme ever composed.
    • "100 Metres" from Chariots of Fire is a tense and even eerie piece reminiscent of György Ligeti.
  • Song Association: In Argentina, Torneos y Competencias used Blade Runner's "End Titles" for their programs, especially the early years of Fútbol de Primera, so it became synonymous with Association Football programs there.
