YMMV / Tony Hawk in Boom Boom Sabotage

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Was Grimley really that of a malevolent circus freak, or a Tragic Villain who only ended up the way he is due to his livelihood being threatened by his cousin? Sure, traditional circuses may have gone the way of the dodonote  but at the very least Grimley did care about his men whose livelihoods were also under threat by the change in scenery and public tastes.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Grimley's struggles as a circus ringmaster would eventually become reflective of real-life circus troupes in recent years due to increasing pressure from animal rights activists and declining audience interest in the traditional circus. Ringling Bros. shuttered its operations in 2017 after over two centuries of circus performances due to increasing costs and animal cruelty concerns, though they were revived in 2022 albeit without animal acts.
  • He Really Can Act: While not exactly the most talented actor around, Tony did put his theatrical experience to some use. In fairness, Tony Hawk and his fellow Bones Brigade alumni appeared in various skate videos and in a number of mainstream films where they occasionally acted.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Nightmare Fuel: The demonic circus monkeys surely won't make a little kid sleep at night, to say the least.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Sure, it is a contender for the worst animated movie ever made for its bizarre plot and lack of character development, with some labelling it as "Foodfight! with skateboards", but it does have its charm and has attracted an ironic following for its production values and hammy performances by the cast.
  • This Is Your Premise on Drugs: An animated skate video with a plot about an eccentric ringmaster who got riled up by his cousin shutting down his circus and ends up kidnapping a celebrity athlete in the process.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: From its mention of MP3 players to Switch Mitch often brandishing a Playstation Portable lookalike and his Gangsta Rap persona, Boom Boom Sabotage is gushing in 2000s-era pop culture.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: While the film was marketed towards children, it does have some moderate use of mild profanities like "hell" and "crap", a sequence involving nightmarishly-looking demonic monkeys and a reference to Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.
