YMMV / Let There Be Light (2017)

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: The 9/11 footage, a religiously-motivated terrorist act at the beginning in a movie about people coming to religious belief. Is it saying that religious belief leads some to commit questionable acts?
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The film opens with news footage of 9/11. It isn't about 9/11 or even terrorism in general.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With Jesus, Bro! fans due to both films having a similar plot.
  • Glurge:
    • The way this movie portrays non-Christians as bad people, and Christians as invariably good, sends the message that other beliefs are worthless. Then again, this movie was always intended as an exploitation piece.
    • The film seems to suggest that Harkens' son getting cancer and dying, him becoming an "atheist" and then suffer a near-death-experience where he specifically sees his dead son was part of "God's plan" for Harkens to renew his faith and bring more people into Christianity. Some people see this as a messed-up message once Fridge Logic kicks in.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Dr. Sol tearfully telling his son, "I don't want to go" as his hand starts disintegrating becomes this when a year later, Avengers: Infinity War would do the exact same thing with Spider-Man's now iconic death.
  • Informed Wrongness: The neurologist who treats Harkens after his accident gives the rational, medical explanation for his near death experience; yet she is dismissed as just another atheist in the movie (you know this because she immediately introduces herself as a pre-conversion Harkens fan).
  • Narm:
    • The scene when Katy starts convulsing because of her brain tumor is supposed to be very dramatic, but due to poor acting from the Sorbo family, it comes off as unintentionally funny. The Cinema Snob certainly agreed with this, as during his review of the film, he dubbed a fart noise over the scene; also Hannah and Jake in their review burst into laughter and played a looping footage of the scene with funny music.
    • When a group of people are illuminating the sky with the flashlights of their cellphones, one of them has their phone upside-down with the flashlight pointing to the ground instead.
    • The way Katy says "Who pays the emotional bills?" (in response to Sol saying that his lecturing tours pay the bills) like it's the deepest line ever.
    • Sean Hannity reporting that the "Let There Be Light" movement was even visible in North Korea was too unbelievable to be taken with a straight face. As it would imply that North Koreans actually celebrate Christmas, download apps on their mobile phones and watch Sean Hannity. There's a very weak attempt to lampshade it with him saying "how did they even hear about this?", but the sheer idea of it is too laughable.
  • Special Effect Failure: Owing it to the film's modest budget:
    • The "Tunnel of Light" sequence is so poorly done, Harkens' feet even clip through it.
    • Katy is supposed to be going through chemotherapy, but she still has eyebrows.
    • The space view of the Earth during the "Let There Be Light" event looks very fake with its CGI.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Some people have pointed out that Pastor Vinny's backstory is way more interesting than Sol's; considering that it seems based on his actor, Michael Franzese's, Real Life experiences (see Reality Subtext) some people wonder if it the movie would have worked better if it would have been about him.
