YMMV / Guest from the Future

• Adaptation Displacement: Overshadows the book so much that the book sometimes gets published under the name Guest from the Future.
• Awesome Music: The main theme "Prekrasnoye Daleko" ("The Fair Unknown").
• Broken Base: Book fans vs. movie fans.
• Cult Classic: Mainstream back when it was released, but today and in the world overall it is a cult classic.
• Fountain of Memes: This movie has inspired mashup videos of "Guest From the Future plus Terminator" thanks to many similarities between the two films. Here is one.
• He Really Can Act: Opinions on the children's acting vary and many of them are critical, but people agree Alexey Fomkin's Acting For Three performance in the final episode is brilliant.
• Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: There are two Space Pirates who kill at least one person on-screen (a Ridiculously Human Robot; there are also two victims whose fate is left ambiguous) and are willing to torture children. Are they the most universally despised ones among the fans? No, that title goes to Dirty Coward Ishutin who sees the pirates carrying an unconscious child, gets frightened into silence and insists, even when asked directly, that he saw nothing. Many have given the pirates Evil Is Cool and/or Draco in Leather Pants treatment, but never has anyone been detected doing the same about Ishutin.
• Moral Event Horizon: The pirates seem silly at first, but then when they kill Werther, they cross into real evil territory.
• Narm Charm: With the Special Effect Failure and the plot holes that even the most devoted fans admit to see, it's still a beloved Cult Classic. The characters, especially Alice, are that awesome. Especially obvious compared to the book, which has less narm – and, if the fanbases’ sizes are any indication, less charm as well.
• Never Live It Down: Grandpa Pavel didn't believe Kolya at first when Kolya tried to tell him about the pirates. On one of the fansites it has once spawned a many-page anti-Grandpa Pavel discussion.
• Toy Ship: Alisa gets often shipped with one of the Kolyas, usually Gerasimov/Naumov since he is naturally the one most involved in the plot, he gets to know her earlier than the rest of the class, and gets to be the most heroic one. However, there are also fanfics with her falling for Sadovsky's snarky charm or bonding with Sulima over their shared interest in science.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Many viewers have noted that Polina behaves very coldly with the children in the final scene, not even helping Kolya Gerasimov or praising the kids' bravery. Even though she does rescue the children, many feel that she is condescending and disdainful towards them. It's a stark contrast to the book, where Nikolay Nikolayevich thanks the children for their help and offers assistance to Kolya.
