YMMV / Grand Theft Auto VI

Go To

  • Friendly Fandoms: Soon after the reveal trailer was released, many fans of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean took an interest in this game, due to the fact that both works are the sixth numbered installments of their respective series, star a female (ex-)convict, and are set in a fictional version of Florida.
  • I Knew It!: As early as before the release of Grand Theft Auto V, many fans correctly guessed that VI would be taking place in Vice City, due to the previous two games taking place in Liberty City and San Andreas, respectively (leaving Vice City as the only unexplored region in the HD era), as well as "VI" being the first two letters of "Vice City".
  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: The series in general is already one for Americans, but Floridians loved the way the state's Fictional Counterpart was depicted in the trailer, and could tell how much Rockstar has Shown Their Work beyond just "Florida Man" memes.
    • Flanigan's, a restaurant chain that's restricted to South Florida, immediately had their Twitter account post a screencap depicting the game's in-universe counterpart of the restaurant, with the comment "Wouldn’t be Miami without us".
    • The Miami nightclub E11EVEN, fictionalized in-game as NINE1NINE, flew a banner over Miami Beach reading "WHEN NINE 1 NINE = E11EVEN", which homaged a similar one seen in the trailer and pointed out that they were likely the real-life inspiration for that bit. In the accompanying video, they said "To all the rockstars in the game, if we missed the target, we still loved the mission... can't wait to play!"
  • Older Than They Think: Multiple reports have called Lucia the first female protagonist in the Grand Theft Auto series. However, even discounting the fact that the multiplayer modes of Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V had the option of female avatars, you could play as a female character in the original Grand Theft Auto (Classic) as well as the Game Boy Color port of its sequel. That said, the Player Character in those games didn't have much to go on in terms of characterization beyond a picture in the menu, with Tommy Vercetti of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City being the first GTA protagonist to have voice acting and a distinct personality. Lucia is just the first female GTA protagonist who isn't just a set of blocky, indistinct sprites whose name, gender, and appearance is only made clear in a menu screen.
  • Song Association: Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road", which was the song played during the widely-anticipated reveal trailer for the game fans of the series waited over a decade for.
