YMMV / Five Nights at Treasure Island

General

  • Angst Dissonance: Despite the obviously-dark themes of the series, absolutely no one in the community takes it seriously and constantly jokes about it. While this applies to the franchise it's based on, the idea of this is much more applicable to this fan game in particular.
  • Evil Is Cool: The suits/toons that are essentially corrupted versions of Mickey Mouse characters are darkly hilarious in all versions they appear in, and always have an imposing presence during their attack sequences. The exception is MOTHER, who is definitely designed to be hated and has no real "cool" factors to her, being the most despicable villain in the series by a long shot.

The Demo/Classic Mode

  • Adaptation Displacement: With the release of the initial version of Treasure Island, the games became much more internet-famous than the Abandoned by Disney creepypasta it was based on.
  • Creepy Awesome: Every suit in this game is pretty cool looking. Naturally, they're also scary as hell and out for your blood.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Oswald, who is colored black just like most of the backgrounds, making him very hard to spot until it's too late.
    • Donald's head also counts even though he doesn't attack you. This is because he can teleport into your office at any time and makes very loud noises to attract the other animatronics. Ditto for Daisy and Pluto, who work the same way.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • The way Oswald calls out to God initially makes it look like a typical case of an earth-bound soul begging for their eternal rest. So why aren't Oswald, or the other characters, getting their rest? Because they're calling out to the God who created them: Walt Disney. Except Walt Disney is dead. He's never coming back for his creations. A real Tear Jerker if there ever was one.
    • The characters' reason for their volatile behaviour is likely due to their inability to accept the fact that their beloved creator is gone forever, while they remain trapped in the mortal realm with absolutely no way to reunite with him.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Purity Sinner while playing the demo tells Oswald, who is asking for God, "Don't worry, sweetheart, God is here."
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The moment Steamboat Willie/Mickey 1.0 became public domain in 2024, people started making teasers for paid horror games centered around him in an instant. Considering this is a freeware Mickey Mouse horror game made a decade prior...
  • Jerkass Woobie: Oswald seems to be this, giving that some of his dialog seems to sound like he's begging for mercy from God.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Has its own page, of course.
  • Tear Jerker: The previous intern before Jake Smith didn't survive. Only Lisa and Greg know what happened to him, which means his parents never found out...
  • The Scrappy: In the original 1.0 version, no one likes Greg, the guy who calls on Night One, probably because Greg hid more than his fair share of information. He recovered when later demos changed Greg's actor, switching his voice from the gruff one he previously had to one who came across as nicer and seemed to genuinely try to help Jake out.
  • Special Effect Failure: The jumpscare animations are really choppy and primitive, diminishing the scare value for some players. The Photo-Negative Mickey jumpscare in the main menu even starts with the model in an A-pose.

2020 Edition

  • Cheese Strategy: Mortimer's ability to deactivate every other enemy, if he activates, can be taken advantage of during the later nights to make the level easier, as he's the only enemy whenever he's active.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Due to Nocturnum, developer of the final version of the game, exposing Dormitabis developer Blackout for his crimes and causing Blackout to go radio silent, the two communities are constantly rivalling with one another.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Turning off the lights. Normally, by doing so, you might be able to fend off The Face and check if there's someone on the room by their glowing eyes considering the lack of light (yes, this also applies even to Disembodied, who has no head), but you can also see said eyes when there's no one on the room, and it gets to the point that you can even see the room filled with everyone's eyes.
  • The Woobie: Jake Smith, the person who took the job to watch after the SSA's equipment for an investigation, and as such remains under the constant threat of the suits.
