YMMV / Devils and Realist

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The cultural festival at the school. Half of the stalls there are clearly things one would see at a modern Japanese school's cultural festival and it's really not providing much more than Fanservice.
  • Cry for the Devil: A given, in that the series flips the hierarchy of good and evil and primarily tells the story from the point of view of Hell.
  • Fridge Logic:
    • If William's uncle went bankrupt and all his assets were taken, why did they take the stuff inside the house instead of the house itself? For that matter, why are there still paintings on the wall? Any paintings the Twining house approved of would likely be worth a fortune.
    • How come Uriel looked exactly like Kevin back in Solomon's time, way before any plans to impersonate the steward because William didn't even exist yet?
  • Genius Bonus: For those of us more familiar with ancient history and biblical texts.
    • For example, Michael may be based on a biblical concept called 'imitatio dei' or 'imitation of God'. Specifically, imitation of the fact that God doesn't die and doesn't have sex. Michael sort of does this in the manga—he ignores the fact that he is literally dying of sleep deprivation, he flips out when Metatron makes an innuendo, etc. Isaac even explicitly refers to him as 'the one who is like god'.
      • Metatron— "Perhaps... I should sleep with you?"
      • Michael— "Don't touch me, you piece of dirt! (Punches him so hard that he literally explodes.)"
  • Lost in Translation: William should be calling himself an Atheist instead of a Realist. Along with how much he says it in the first episode it appears he doesn't know the meaning of the word himself. More correct for the time period, he should be calling himself a Positivist.
  • Memetic Molester:
    • Solomon. He just hit on every pretty demon boy didn't he...
    • Gilles too. It doesn't help that he flirts with everyone and has a habit of appearing between Dantalion's legs.
  • Moe: Isaac's Big Ol' Eyebrows and friendly, adorkably earnest manner make him very cute.
  • No Yay: Gilles's obsession with Joan.
    • Michael's abusive relationship with Uriel. The scenes in which Michael taunts Uriel about tearing off his wing in the past and threatens to do the same to the remaining one have disturbing rape connotations.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Anyone you know could actually be a demon or angel in disguise.
  • Replacement Scrappy: In-series, William for Solomon. It hurts even more that most of the demons think that William is actually Solomon and are disappointed that he doesn't seem to remember anything.
  • The Woobie: Lots, given the Crapsack version of Heaven here.
    • Every demon that was once an angel or human and turned to Hell out of despair.
    • Sytry, who appears to have been ripped from heaven against his will with his struggles between his loyalty to his faction in hell, his old loyalties to heaven, and his newfound loyalty and genuine affection toward William.
    • And Uriel, who's torn between loyalty to God and the higher order and his concern for William, even after already having a wing torn off and his rank stripped away for an earlier case of disobedience.
    • Dantalion for a multitude of reasons, but it's particularly sad to see how much he seems to genuinely care for William in earlier chapters, only to have his concern and friendship rebuked.
