YMMV / Barbie Fairytopia

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Bibble has a tendency to inspire a lot of strong love or strong hate.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The Reactive Continuous Scream near the beginning of Mermaidia. We don't even get to see Elina's reaction during the whole thing. She only says "Sorry we scared you" right after and that's it.
  • Broken Aesop: In recent years, it's been pointed out how the first movie ends in something of a mixed message regarding disabilities — namely, Elina rejects Laverna's offer to grant her wings and accepts herself as she is, with Elina being presented as just as capable and worthy despite being wingless, only for the Enchantress to reward Elina by giving her wings anyway. Some viewers see this as having ableist undertones given Elina's disability is magically 'fixed' even after all that talk about Elina not needing to be just like all the other fairies. Popular fanon is that Elina's new wings are in fact a pair of prosthetic wings that can be deactivated by removing the necklace the Enchantress gave her.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Dandelion is surprisingly popular for a minor character with little screentime. Mostly because she remained a good friend to Elina, even before the latter had wings, and stood up for her against bullies.
    • Faban from the third movie. Even with his little screentime, he's generally considered one of the funniest characters in the franchise.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Elina. Practically anyone who ever interacts with her for more than a few minutes is shipped with her somewhere. The most popular ones include Dandelion, Azura, Laverna, Nalu, Nori (sometimes even both at the same time), Linden, Sunburst and Mariposa.
  • Les Yay:
    • In Fairytopia Live, during her We Can Rule Together song, among other things Laverna says Elina can be her consort.
    • In Mermaidia, Elina and Nalu's not-girlfriend Nori initially got off the wrong foot, but eventually learn to work together, sharing a lot of tender moments between each other. Including Holding Hands, when they need to go through a dangerous passage.
    • In Magic Of The Rainbow, Elina also gets off the wrong foot with Sunburst, and they become rivals. Until the climax, where Elina goes out of her way to save her.
  • Memetic Mutation: Bibble Singing is pretty popular amoung those who were emo tweens/teens during their childhood, recalling the lyrics to songs they sang along to.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Fungus Maximus crosses the line when he decides to destroy Mermaidia even after he gets the immunity berry (or so he thinks) for Laverna.
  • The Woobie: Elina in all three movies; the first because she has no wings and gets bullied for it, the second because she has to give up her wings and may have to live underwater permanently, and the third because she makes several mistakes that could doom Fairytopia (even when she's just trying to help).
