SpongeBob in Real Life is a Fan Animation, created by JChaseFilms, and is based on the Nicktoon, SpongeBob SquarePants. What used to be an entry for a contest for SpongeBob shorts became one of the most viewed videos of all time. So what do you do if it’s popular? Make another one of course!

SpongeBob in Real Life is about SpongeBob and his friends who get sent to the real world because of a remote. They have fun at first with their teenage friend, Jonathan, along with the rest of his pals. But when they find out a CEO, Damian Cooper, wants to destroy all cartoon characters, it’s up to SpongeBob and his friends to save the multiverses. But aside all that, the friends go on the most unpredictable adventures you can think of.

The series was first made for a contest called SpongeBob SquareShorts. Jonathan sent in a video about SpongeBob and Patrick in the real world, which is basically the start of the entire series. He sent right after the deadline, so it didn’t go in. But Jonathan decided to share it on YouTube because he was proud about his short, and soon enough it started gaining more views! And that was the start of the story.

You can see the entire series here, the first 6 episodes joined up here, or, you can see how the entire series was made here.

Tropes:

  • Big Bad: The main villain of the series, Damian Cooper, is an evil CEO that wants to destroy all cartoons.

  • Cruise Episode: In Episode 7, Jonathan, SpongeBob, and their friends, Patrick, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs, go on a cruise for summer vacation.

  • Et Tu, Brute?: Plankton gets betrayed by Damian in the sixth episode after the CEO thinks Plankton has done enough, and instead following the process Plankton gives him (Damian gets to destroy some cartoon characters, Plankton gets to rule everyone else), he decides to destroy every toon.

  • Fish out of Water: SpongeBob and his friends (Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Gary, and Plankton) get sent to the real world.

  • Foreshadowing: In the beginning of episode 5, Patrick says that he hopes there won’t be “evil bad guys in suits trying to destroy the world.” This plan comes to motion by Damian by the end of the episode to destroy all cartoon worlds.

  • Mystery Fiction: Episode 8 is centered around SpongeBob and Patrick trying to find out who knocked out Squilliam unconscious.

  • No-Dialogue Episode: Unlike other episodes, Episode 1 has no dialogue and only music.

  • The Olympics: Episode 9 is centered around SpongeBob and his friends entering and competing the Olympics, and it seems like everyone is winning except SpongeBob.

  • Playing with Fire: The Dirty Bubble catches on fire because of a plan Jonothan thought up. Only problem is: that just makes him more powerful.

  • Roger Rabbit Effect: The entire series uses this type of technique. The animation is done digitally, while everything is recorded live action.

  • Spit Take: Don Mahogony does this in episode 9 when he is drinking diet coffee unaware he is live on TV.

  • Vacation Episode: Episode 7, where SpongeBob and his pals go on a cruise.

  • Wham Episode: Episode 6 (the last episode in the SpongeBob in Real Life Movie Arc). Here is a recap: SpongeBob and his pals find themselves in a high-stakes battle to save not only the cartoon universes but also the real world. The adventure takes a perilous turn as they face off against the nefarious young billionaire, Damian Cooper. The gang even loses two characters, Patrick and Squidward. The friends reaches Damian’s office, where the fate of all worlds hangs in the balance. They manage to reset the destructive machine and save all cartoons, with Patrick and Squidward reviving and Damian losing.
