Sonic.EYX, also known as Sonic the Hedgehog: Editable ROM or simply EYX, is a video game based on the Sonic.exe creepypasta, created by Kaua16.
Due to the original lead developer for the game, CloudyCrack, departing from the team, a full rework of the game is underway.
The game was originally available for download here
until August 9th, by which the original page for the game was deleted from GameJolt. It has since been moved to a new page, which is available for download here.
Tropes
- Art Shift: After Knuckles's segment of the game, the characters' art style changes from the original Genesis style to original sprites courtesy of the game's director.
- Body Horror: Aside from EYX itself, its victims become severly mutilated when it kills them.
- Tails' body become black-grey like in the original pasta but now his head is reduced to a red skull. By the end of the Round 1 demo, it's revealed that EYX had burnt him alive.
- Knuckles has a lot of eyes on his face and a pair of black tendrils. Worse is that, as confirmed by
Word of God, he's still alive, but his body had become a vessel for a parasite. - Eggman's neck becomes very long and his body becomes greyscale.
- Amy Rose's arms are elongated and disfigured and wears a mask that conceals her disfigured face.
- Checkpoint Starvation: In Crystal Lake Zone Act 1, there are no checkpoints anywhere in sight (only one by the point before things go Off the Rails), meaning that if you end up dying with Sonic at any point, it's back to the beginning of the horror marathon, with no way to skip any of the sequences.
- Creepy Long Arms: EYX has them in its Draenog form. Eggman also has them after getting killed by EYX.
- Cyclops: EYX has a singular eye in its Draenog form.
- Eye Motifs: Heavily present throughout the game. The titular EYX has a large, prominent eye in its Draenog form, dark and ominous eyes are often seen in the background watching the player's every move, many of the characters suddenly gain semi-realisticnote eyes during or after EYX attacks them, and victims sometimes have their eyes blanked. Additionally, EYX itself mentions a need to "see" the player via the game's window name, even trying to access your webcam. The name EYX can also be interpreted as a combination of "eye" and ".EXE".
- The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: During Knuckles's What the Hell, Player? dialogue, a pop-up appears claiming that the game tried and failed to access your internet connection. Later on, when EYX tries to "see" you, a similar pop-up claiming that the game was denied webcam access appears (even if your computer doesn't actually have one). Thankfully these pop-ups are fake, as the game would be considered malware otherwise.
- Kill It with Fire: Tails has his face burned off by EYX.
- Kill It with Water: Conversely, Sonic is implied to have drowned at the hands of EYX.
- Lean and Mean: EYX in its Draenog form is just as lanky as it is murderous.
- Mouth Stitched Shut: Amy Rose's face appears to have this, though whether it's her mask or her actual face is unclear.
- Promoted to Playable: Unlike in the original creepypasta, Sonic himself has a role as one of the victims of EYX, and much sooner than would normally come. What's more, the entire classic Sonic cast (aside from the robotic doppelgangers and certain characters who didn't make any official release back in those days, such as the Sonic Band and Tiara Boobowski) are playable between the game's two consecutive rounds.
- Recycled Soundtrack: Crystal Lake Zone uses “Water Goddess Mitula” from Shining Force II as the background music.
- What the Hell, Player?: Shortly after Tails is first attacked by EYX, Knuckles appears to chew the player out over watching and seemingly enjoying the torment of him and the other Sonic characters, possibly as a reference to how many other Sonic.EXE games feature horrible things happening to them. He states that he and the others don't deserve this pain while the player does, and that EYX is coming for them, all while a Nightmare Face gradually appears on Knuckles.
