Elevator Action is the first game made by Taito, released in Japan and North America in 1983 and in Europe in 1984. It was originally (at first) made for the arcade. It was later ported to the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Famicom, Game Boy, MSX, NES, SG-1000 and the ZX Spectrum. Modern ports were also done though mobile phones, the Playstation 4, Steam and the Nintendo Switch.

Players assume the role of Agent 17 aka Otto, who has to search buildings full of enemy spies trying to kill him. Otto needs to travel down one floor each by using an elevator, which is located in the middle of said building. However, Otto can also jump across the shaft if the elevator is located on a floor above him. Otto's objective is to reach the ground floor, where his getaway car awaits.

Most of the doors are blue, but Otto can open red doors, walk into those rooms and come back out with secret dossiers.

Elevator Action 1 provides examples of:

  • Endless Game: After beating the final stage, you're taken back straight to the beginning to do it all over again until you lose.
  • Kill the Lights: Otto can shoot the lights in order to distract the enemies.
  • My Rules Are Not Your Rules: In later levels, your enemies can lie prone on the floor and shoot at you. You are limited to standing and kneeling.
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder: Otto and the enemies can only take one hit. Thankfully, later games add health bars and hit points.
  • Re-Release Soundtrack: The ZX Spectrum and Amstrad versions have a completely different soundtrack.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Otto and the enemy spies are dressed in suits and ties, although the spies also wear hats.
