Shout Out / Gensou Shoujo Taisen

Go To

Between Super Robot Wars and Touhou Project, it shouldn't be any surprise that Gensou Shoujo Taisen is packed with references to both halves of its source material, and countless more besides.

  • There's even one to Super Marisa Land.
    Marisa: ..Achoo!
Keine: What's wrong, Marisa? Did you catch a cold?
Marisa: ...Nah, it ain't a cold. Someone must've been talking about me. Being a hero's tough. All the people's expectations are real heavy.
Nitori: People have expectations of you...? Like for reforming all of mushroomkind?
Marisa: What, do you think I'm the hero of the mushroom kingdom or something?
  • And this gem. It's ironic since the attack she pulls off while saying this is relativelyeasy to dodge, and the game referenced is much harder than Touhou.
    Kurumi: Ohhh, DoDoDoDonPachi!
  • Whenever you choose to return to the title screen after saving, you'll get a quick little chat from the characters in the game. One of these, has this line.
Patchouli: …Oh, you're done for now? Hmm, words to say when the player ends the game… … Next time on Fantasy Maiden Wars, SWITCH ON! … Something feels off somehow…
  • Stage 12 of Kou has a bonus conversation spot where Reimu, Marisa, Keine, and Alice can react to a piece of taiyaki that strongly resembles the head of Gaiking's ship, the Daiku-Maryu. Reimu's bonus conversation calls out the reference by name.
  • The final stage in Kou has Flandre spouting out references to And Then There Were None, coming back again in her rematch halfway through Ei.
  • This line by Marisa should she deal the final blow on Flandre with Master Spark is a clear reference to Lyrical Nanoha.
  • Mima's Akashic Catastrophe involves her making a spell circle and sphere of darkness that should both look very familiar to anyone who's seen Galilnagant's Axion Asher. Additionally, the attack also shows some images of the other bosses from Touhou Reiiden ~ Highly Responsive to Prayers, making this a double reference.
  • Byakuren's Master of the Great Trichiliocosm ends with the same shot of punching an opponent into an exploding mountain as Apotheosized Ialdabaoth's Shinha Goshou Sen.
  • The Prismrivers produce an Aquarion-style attack title card when using Ghostly Wheel Concerto Grosso.
  • Marisa's Final Spark involves charging the attack in the same fashion as Shin Getter Robo's Stoner Sunshine. Most of Shin Getter's other attacks are in Remilia's movepool, including the Shinespark.
  • The Aki sisters have three different combination attacks and all of them are references to Gunbuster.
  • Elly and Kurumi's combination attack references the Psyco Gundam's reflector bits.
  • Reimu and Sanae's combination attack is styled after the Chakra Extension combination attacks from Brain Powerd.
  • Shinki's Demoness Gospel is styled after one of Adamatron's attacks.
  • The Komeiji Heartbreaker is a pastiche of the Royal Heartbreaker.
  • Most of Full Armor Nitori's movepool references the ZZ Gundam.
  • Cirno and Daiyousei's Twin Fairy Strike is named for, but does not particularly resemble, the Twin Bird Strike. Cirno's other combination attacks are named and themed after the Final Dynamic Special often given to Mazinger Z and Getter Robo.
  • Iku's Dragonfish Drill Break is the least subtle of the whole lot. (For those who don't get it, it's nearly a one-for-one recreation of the Gurren Lagann's signature move, the Giga Drill Break). Her Swimming Thunder Shot is also a reference to Great Mazinger's Thunder Break.
  • Though arguably, it's a toss up between that and Hisoutensoku's moveset- Hisoutensoku as it is is basically a walking Mazinger Z reference- Photon Beam, Rocket Punch and Breast Fire all appear in its moveset. Sanae must've been a fan.
  • Meiling's Colorful Light Lotus Palm is based on Agares's finisher from OG Gaiden.
  • Reisen's Lunatic Red Eyes references Trans-AM and Invisible Full Moon references the Satellite Cannon.
  • Speaking of Trans-AM, Tenshi's Scarlet Weather Rhapsody of All Fantasy is a blatant reference to the Raiser Sword used by Setsuna's 00 Raiser and 00 QAN[T]. Her Kaname Funnel attack is also a reference to the Funnels used in various Gundam works (as in canon).
  • Wriggle Kick is styled after the Gespenst Kick.
  • One of Nue's attacks is a clear reference to the Moonlight Butterfly of ∀ Gundam fame.
  • Rumia's Midnight Bird is a reference to Jojos Bizarre Adventure, specifically the Polnareff vs Vanilla Ice fight.
  • Byakuren's Super Mode acts similarly to Dragon Ball's Super Saiyans. To further the reference, The spell card of the Nightmare Byakuren fought in Chapter 73 is called Majin "Byakuren", referencing Majin Vegeta from the same series.
