- The Hawkwind building has a Durian Durian album on the walls, implied to be Rio.
- Two of the main characters sing Rio while sailing on a boat.
- One of the cafes is named Sing Blue Silver, and a character named Rio works there.
- One chapter is called "And He Battles On The Sand" while another is titled "We're Only Miles Away from Nowhere"
