Recap / Whats New Scooby Doo S 2 E 4 The Fast And The Wormious

Go To

Fred signs up for a cross-country desert race, with the rest of the gang as his pit crew. The race proves difficult, but the hot, bare environment ends up being less trouble than the fellow racers, a desert cult, and a gigantic worm.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Attack of the Killer Whatever: The monster of the episode is a worm longer and thicker than a car.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Scooby wins the race, even though he was technically only a member of Fred's crew.
  • Description Cut: As a news crew interviews him about the race, Roberto Torres says that anyone involved has got to be completely fearless. Cut to Shaggy and Scooby jumping at something relatively harmless.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: This episode marks the first appearance of Gibby Norton, a fellow nerd with an unreciprocated crush on Velma. While Velma is dismissive, she's nowhere near as cutting as she will be in later episodes (one in the same season even had her begging for Gibby to be the culprit so they could send him to jail); she even seems potentially flattered that he pulled the entire hoax to impress her with his worm-mobile.
  • Loophole Abuse: When none of the racers can get their cars to the finish line, all of them run on foot to cross it and stop short when they all trip over each other. Scooby wins by reaching his paw over the line.
  • Off with His Head!: Fred beheads the giant worm using the Mystery Machine as a weapon.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title references The Fast and the Furious.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: One of the other racers, Burr Batson, tells Fred he's going to need horses to drag the Mystery Machine out of a ditch once Burr knocks it out of the way.
  • Wacky Racing: Fred enters the Mystery Machine in one of these. Because this is Scooby-Doo, the already bizarre race gets interrupted by a large worm monster, which turns out to be one of the racers.
