Recap / Trollhunters S2 E13 "In the Hall of the Gumm-Gumm King"

Go To

Vendal is dead, Jim has been sentenced to death. And Gunmar has arrived to take over Trollmarket.

Tropes:

  • Actually a Doombot: On finding Gunmar at the Janus Order, Jim manages to cut him down only to reveal he was Otto, having been mind controlled by Gunmar to serve as a decoy.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Gunmar seizes control of Trollmarket after Usurna lets him in.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Jim has managed to save most of Trollmarket, Blinky has become the troll's new leader, and the Trollhunters have gained new allies in Steve, Eli, Strickler, and Nomura. On the other hand Gunmar has still taken over Trollmarket and enslaved several innocent trolls, Draal is still brainwashed, Vendal is dead, and Claire has been corrupted by over-exerting herself with the Shadow Staff and was controlled by Argante to resurrect Angor Rot.
  • The Bus Came Back: Nomura has returned and has brought Strickler back with her to help in their fight against Gunmar. Also, the ending has Claire take Angor Rot's stone head to Argante, possibly to be revived.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Blinky finds an anamnesis stone among the rubble of Vendal's corpse, allowing Blinky to rig up a hologram of the last moments of his death so that everyone can see that Usurna was the one who killed him.
  • Deadly Upgrade: Claire considers using the Skathe-Hrün to evacuate all of Trollmarket at once, but Blinky points out that it is an object of dark magic. Just like how using it multiple times risks tiring her out, using it on a massive scale could risk death.
  • Didn't Think This Through: While the group comes up with a plan to evacuate Trollmarket to save the trolls from Gunmar's control, they fail to account for the fact that it's still day out and thus the trolls can't escape into the forest without risking sun exposure. Eli and Steve are able to help with umbrellas.
  • Exact Words: Jim manages to survive and escape The Deep. When others insist that no troll has ever survived the deep, Jim just remarks that he's no troll.
  • Frame-Up: Vendal's death is blamed on Jim, although Usurna then immediately allowing Gunmar into Trollmarket likely hinders her credibility as nobody calls Jim out for this afterward.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When Claire is under the effect of Argante her eyes glow.
  • Gondor Calls for Aid: With the refugee trolls unable to escape in the sunlight, in an act of desperation, Jim calls Steve assuming he knows his secret and asks him for help.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Jim slices Otto as Gunmar in half. However it's somewhat subverted as when he reverts back to Otto he doesn't appear to have any wounds (though he still dies).
  • I Come in Peace: Steve and Eli to the trolls.
  • Ironic Echo: The way Blinky has Dictatious strung up is similar to how he had Blinky strung up back in the Darklands.
  • Join or Die: Those who do not bow before Gunmar will either die or will be forcefully converted with his enchanted sword.
  • Kneel Before Frodo: When Jim anoints Blinky as the trolls' new leader, they all bow to him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By overexerting herself with the Skathe-Hrün to create a large portal to allow all of Trollkind to escape, Claire becomes open to Argante's control.
  • Passing the Torch: Vendal's walking staff is given to Blinky by the end of the episode, christening him Trollmarket's troll's leader during their exile.
  • The Power of Friendship: Claire was able to open a portal large enough for the rest of the trolls when the rest of the trollhunter team grabbed onto the Skathe-Hrün to help ease the strain.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Gatto (in the form of his floating face) immediately flees when Gunmar reveals himself to Trollmarket.
  • Secret-Keeper: Eli and Steve are promoted to this after they help save the refugee Trolls by providing protection from the sun. They finally appear to be in the loop afterwards.
  • Shout-Out: The title of the episode is named after the famous troll song The Hall Of The Mountain King which, despite being used in comedy, actually is meant to evoke fear and paranoia. Much like how this episode ends up doing.
  • This Is Your Brain on Evil: It is implied that Claire has become an unwitting Manchurian Agent to Argante after using the Skathe-Hrün past her usual limitations.
  • Uncomfortable Elevator Moment: The elevator to the Janus Order's hideout is fairly quiet and uneventful, with calming elevator music playing (though Aaarrrgghh!!! does cut one).
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: When the gang go to the Janus Order's hideout, they find the whole place in ruins, everybody dead except for a mind-controlled Otto pretending to be Gunmar himself to act as a decoy.
