Season 8, Episode 2

Aaron and Jesus lead strikes on two Savior outposts.

  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: After besieging the Sanctuary with walkers in the previous episode, the allied forces of Alexandra, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom surprise attack three Savior outposts. Jesus, Morgan, and Tara succeed in taking the satellite outpost and take a number of prisoners. Rick, Daryl, and Aaron raid Regina's outpost in an insurance building with mixed results. Ezekiel and Carol head towards a third outpost, but are delayed by a Savior lookout.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Several of the Saviors in Mara's outpost are shot down by Aaron's strikeforce, reanimating in the middle of the battle and attacking their former comrades.
  • Anyone Can Die: Francine, Andy, and Freddie are the first casualties of the allied forces. Eric's odds don't look so good after getting shot in the abdomen.
  • Bring It: The Kingdom forces overhear Savior radio chatter that they know they are coming. Despite Carol's protests, Ezekiel simply smiles and announces they will attack nonetheless.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Morales returns after being absent since the end of Season 1.
    • Jared reappears after last being seen in Season 7's "Bury Me Here", as one of the Saviors stationed in the satellite outpost that surrenders to the allied strikeforce led by Jesus.
  • Car Fu: During the battle, Aaron hops in his Taurus and drives through a few Saviors who have pinned down Eric.
  • Cliffhanger: At least in regards to Aaron's group. Francine and Eric have both been shot (and, in Francine's case, mortally wounded) and Aaron struggles to get his boyfriend to safety.
    • And Rick is held at gunpoint by Morales, who has called the Saviors and has loaded his gun.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Morales was one of the founding members of the original Atlanta camp back in Season 1's "Wildfire". After the fish fry attack in "Tell It To The Frogs" forced the survivors to find a new shelter, Morales and his family left the group to go looking for family in Birmingham. Word of God states all of Morales' family is now dead.
    • The satellite outpost attacked by allies led by Jesus and Tara is the same one that the group attacked in Season 6. It has since been re-staffed.
    • Tara is eager to slaughter Saviors to avenge Denise's death back in Season 6's "Twice As Far".
    • The portrait Simon took from Gregory in "Go Getters" is hanging on the wall in the insurance office outpost.
    • Daryl finds a prison cell with some discarded bread and dog food, giving him unpleasant flashbacks to his incarceration and dog food diet at the Sanctuary during the first half of Season 7.
      • There is also a pair of handcuffs in the cell, likely a nod to Merle.
    • The satellite outpost Saviors have some of Hilltop's medical supplies, including prenatal vitamins, likely from their conscripting of Carson back in Season 7's "The Other Side".
    • Morgan nearly kills Jared for his murder of Benjamin in Season 7's "Bury Me Here".
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Gracie's father is strangled by Rick while choking on his own blood, before he's thrown into a wall face-first while impaled on a shelf holder.
  • Eaten Alive: Mara is devoured by a reanimated Savior.
    • Nelson, the Savior that threw the grenade at the Kingdomers last episode, is similarly killed and devoured by Shiva.
  • Evil Former Friend: Morales is back, and he has joined the Saviors.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: When Rick retrieves the keys from the recently-deceased Savior's corpse, you can see the Savior has a tattoo on his chest that says "Grace be God." Rick then uses the keys to open a door to what he believes the room where the Saviors are hiding their guns only to find that it's the nursery to the Savior's infant daughter Grace.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: The satellite outpost Saviors realize they're outnumbered and outgunned and peacefully surrender.
  • Mirror Character: Rick is aghast to discover the baby, as he just killed her father who was fighting to protect her much like Rick is fighting for his own children. To drive the point visually, the Savior even wears clothes similar to Rick's.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Rick has this reaction when he discovers that the Savior he just killed was defending his infant daughter.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mara, the Savior lieutenant attacked by Aaron's group, has this reaction when her slain cohorts begin to reanimate, and she realizes all too late that the allied forces didn't have to advance on their position.
  • One-Man Army: Morgan racks up the biggest bodycount in the episode when he singlehandedly rampages throughout the satellite outpost and slaughters numerous Saviors.
  • To Serve Man: Shiva kills and partially eats the Savior that Ezekiel's forces have been tracking the whole episode.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: The casualties in this episode, Francine, Andy, and Freddie, are all RedShirt's we never got to know.
  • We Used to Be Friends: When Rick remembers that Morales was with the Atlanta group, Morales shrugs it off and says it was a long time ago, and continues holding him at gunpoint.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Dean, a Savior at the Satellite outpost pretends to be a scared, enslaved worker to take Jesus and/or Tara hostage to get out of the satellite outpost. Tara refuses to buy it, but Jesus falls for it, and is quickly taken at gunpoint. Luckily, the two are able to overthrow him and defeat him.
  • Wham Shot: The return of Morales, who has been absent since Season 1. It is accompanied by a Wham Line as we learn that he has joined the Saviors and isn't willing to give much mercy to his now former friend Rick.
