Recap / The Real Ghostbusters S 2 E 7 Adventures In Slime And Space

Go To

Egon is trying to build something, but it keeps blowing up. Peter is teasing Egon, and Ray is glowing. Egon explains that he is trying to build a device to disintegrate ghosts instead of trapping them, while Ray explains that he is trying to invent something they can use to talk to Slimer. Ray (now no longer glowing) tests the translator on Slimer, but it doesn't work. Peter, frustrated with Slimer, acts like he is going to shoot him, causing Slimer to fly around the room and fear and into the machine, which turns him into lots of little Slimers.

The Ghostbusters try to catch them in nets, but they can't, and then they escape the building. Egon then determines that the little Slimers multiply every time they collide with something, but Ray determines that it can't last forever... but may last 4,120 years. Thus, the Ghostbusters have to round them up before the world is drenched in slime.

Meanwhile, New York is being covered in slime, and the Ghostbusters and Janine tell the mayor, who demands they clean the slime up immediately. Egon then gets the idea of getting the little Slimers to be attracted to each other like magnets, but they must catch one first. After they fail at catching a Slimer, one flies into the machine and comes out blue. The others merge with him, but that creates a giant, evil, blue Slimer.

Egon explains that this is because the little Slimers grew as the result of eating, and so now he is too big. While they're trying to persuade the mayor to give them helicopters (as part of Egon's plan for shrinking Slimer back to normal), the evil Slimer grabs Janine. This convinces the mayor, and they use the helicopters to track down Slimer (who's put Janine on the Empire State Building) and zap him, sending him back to normal.

This episode provides examples of

  • And Your Reward Is Edible: Discussed. When Egon explains the plan of making the Slimers attract, Ray says, "Peter, give him a chocolate bar".
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: One woman berates her little son for making peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches.
  • Covered in Gunge:
    • At one point, Ray slips on the slime and ends up with it all over his front.
    • The evil Slimer ends up dumping a whole lot of blue ectoplasm on a crowd of people.
  • Damsel in Distress: Slimer ends up holding Janine over the Empire State Building.
  • Ectoplasm: Exaggerated. The Slimers leave green slime everywhere they go, and they need to be stopped before they cover the world in it.
  • Evil Laugh: The blue Slimer laughs evilly when he first shows up and when Janine demands he put her down.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Getting too big somehow turns Slimer evil.
  • Get Out!: After all the other chaos today, this is Lenny's frustrated reaction to the guys saying they need some helicopters.
  • Hidden Depths: When using the Banana 9000 to write down what he's saying, Slimer proves surprisingly eloquent and verbose.
  • Hope Spot: Ray reveals that the Slimers can't keep multiplying forever... but it would take thousands of years.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Peter says about Slimer, "He slimed me the first time we met", which is what he did in the movie.
    • Lenny the mayor also references the movie by saying, "First terror dogs, then a walking marshmallow, and now this!" Terror dogs are what Dana and Louis turned into, while the walking marshmallow was the main villain.
  • Not So Above It All: When the Slimers start merging, the normally no-nonsense Janine yells, "Hooray!" and punches the air.
  • No, You: When Ray says that his translator "needs a little fine tuning", Peter responds, "You need a little fine tuning!".
  • Oh, Crap!: Ray's reaction to seeing the blue Slimer is a simple, "Oh, dear!"
  • The Pratfall: Some of the characters who slip on the goo end up landing on their butts.
  • Running Gag: People keep wanting to move to Pittsburgh.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After seeing the blue Slimer, Peter says Egon can tell Lenny all about this. Peter, meanwhile, intends to go to Pittsburgh, with Winston all-too happy to join him.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Peter jokingly refers to his proton pack as a "phaser", which is a weapon from Star Trek.
    • He later makes a joke about Howard the Duck running for president.
    • When the evil Slimer is on the Empire State Building, Peter says that it'll keep the gorillas away, which is a reference to King Kong, in which a giant gorilla climbs the Empire State Building.
    • Among those drenched in slime are three people that resemble Moe, Larry, and Curly.
  • Slapstick:
    • Peter, who was dangling from the ceiling, ends up falling down when his jumpsuit rips.
    • Many characters are seen slipping on ectoplasm and falling.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • When Ray says that it would take 412 years for the smaller Slimers to stop multiplying, the rest of the Ghostbusters, plus Janine, echo back in unison, "412 years?!".
    • When Egon suggests seeing the mayor, Ray and Janine say in unison, "See the mayor?!".
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: A woman's only response to the little Slimers is "Oh dear. The weatherman didn't say anything about this."
