Recap / The Real Ghostbusters S 2 E 64 Dairy Farm

Go To

The Ghostbusters want a vacation one night, so Ray suggests they go to his cousin Sam's dairy farm. Peter is not on board with this, but he and the others (plus Slimer) eventually end up going anyway. On their way, they end up crashing into a harvester. The driver directs them to the farm and tells them that his brother can repair the car, but it would take until Sunday.

They arrive at the farm at sunset, and Peter is still grumpy, but he perks up when he meets Ray's cousin Sam (short for Samantha) and falls for her. However, she doesn't return his affections. They talk about the farm over dinner, and then everyone goes to bed. At night, however, an undead rooster rises out of the ground, followed by several otherworldly hands.

The next morning, Sam finds the dairy a total mess. Egon scans the area and determines that a ghost probably did it, but Peter thinks they shouldn't do any work as they're on vacation. Ray and Winston, however, agree to investigate, so they do so, and are chased by a bull. Back in Sam's house, she reveals that the field has been barren ever since she bought the farm, and Egon extracts ectoplasm from some soil he dug up. Ray looks through the records and finds out that the farm used to belong to a family by the name of Peterson, who were all buried on the property, and when the cemetery was moved, the bodies weren't, so their spirits are angry.

They keep watch at night, and just when they start to lose hope that anything will happen, the undead rooster appears again, followed by the Petersons. Sam notes that they appear to be trying to do farm chores but accidentally causing messes. Ray tries to negotiate with them, but offends them instead, and they chase everyone angrily into the house. However, just when they're about to break in, it's sunrise and they disappear (just as Egon predicted they would). He explains that they're experiencing "chronometric reversal": in life, they worked all day, but now that they're dead, they work all night.

The Ghostbusters don't have their equipment with them, so Ray suggests they use the dairy's machinery to build something hold the Petersons in place. That evening, they build the device, and when the Petersons rise, they use it to trap them in an electric field. Sam tells them that they're destroying the farm, and Mr. Peterson agrees to leave so long as she plants daisies every spring. Thus, the Petersons disappear, then Slimer kisses Peter, so Peter chases him away.

This episode provides examples of

  • Alliterative Name: Zigzagged. Sam is a cousin to Ray, so her full name might be Samantha Stantz, but it's unknown if that's true since it isn't known which side of the family she's on.
  • Ambiguously Evil: The Petersons seem to want to kill the Ghostbusters and Sam at one point, but on the other hand, they're willing to listen to reason and leave the farm when told to.
  • Brutish Bulls: At one point, a bull chases Ray, Egon, and Winston.
  • Cock-a-Doodle Dawn:
    • Justified when a rooster crows in the morning, since it's a farm.
    • Inverted when the Petersons' undead pet rooster crows at the beginning of the night to wake them up.
  • Conforming OOC Moment:
    • At the beginning, everyone's tired and wants a vacation, even Ray, who usually loves his job even when he has to work at night.
    • Even Egon joins in on the "Everybody Laughs" Ending.
  • Ectoplasm: In addition to Slimer's green slime, Egon extracts pink ectoplasm from the soil, left by the Petersons.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: At the end, Peter angrily chases Slimer and everyone else laughs.
  • Gender-Concealing Writing: We don't find out that Sam is a woman until we see her.
  • Ghostly Animals: Zigzagged for the rooster; it's unclear if he's a ghost or a zombie.
  • Gilligan Cut: Peter claims that he'll never go to a dairy farm, right before it cuts to him and the others travelling to one.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Even though the electric field generator might blow up, they have to use it anyway as it's their only way of reaching the Petersons.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The Petersons don't know that they're destroying the farm; once they know, they're happy to leave.
  • In-Series Nickname: Samantha mainly goes by Sam.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Peter says that he'll find nothing fun about the farm, right before seeing Sam and falling for her.
  • Nocturnal Mooks: The Petersons are only active at night.
  • No Full Name Given: We don't know Sam's last name, or the Petersons' first names.
  • Not So Stoic: Egon screams when being chased by the Petersons, then joins in on the "Everybody Laughs" Ending.
  • Platonic Kissing: Slimer kisses Peter at the end.
  • Shaking the Rump: Slimer wiggles his butt when dancing at the dairy.
  • Speak in Unison: When Ray, Egon, and Winston see the bull, they shout, "Bull!" in unison.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Subverted. Egon warns the others that the electric field generator may explode, but it doesn't.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: Winston talks in his sleep about the lack of ghosts on the farm.
  • Tempting Fate: Peter says that the best thing about the farm is that there are no ghosts, but then it turns out there's a whole undead family (and their pet rooster) there.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: When the harvester driver sees Slimer, he doesn't pay much attention to him; he just states that city people are weird.
  • Vacation Episode: The episode follows the Ghostbusters vacationing on a dairy farm belonging to Ray's cousin Samantha.
