Recap / The Ghost And Molly Mc Gee S 2 E 29 Smile Valley Farm

Go To

Scratch initially balks at a new hit video game called Smile Valley Farm, but he must hide his ever-growing love for it once he actually gives it a chance.

Tropes:

  • The Alleged Computer: Scratch tries playing Smile Valley Farm in the Ghost World, but since they only have obsolete technology over there the Internet is dial-up and "way too slow".
  • Atrocious Alias: Scratch's username is "DEFINITELY_NOT_SCRATCH". Molly reveals that this is what tipped her off when he sent her a request in the game to connect their farms.
  • Failed a Spot Check: For all his efforts to keep Molly from finding out he got into Smile Valley Farm, he didn't notice the big clues that the user he befriended, "N_H4PP1F13R", was most likely to be Molly. Logically, this is what gets Molly to realize Scratch got into it from the start.
  • Flash In The Pan Fad: Scratch and Molly both eventually get bored with Smile Valley Farm, as does everyone else in Brighton, unfortunately for Sharon who tried to make a fortune reselling collectible blind-bag figurines.
  • I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: Scratch initially refuses to try Smile Valley Farm, but once he does he's hooked on it. He spends the rest of the episode trying to keep his love of the game a secret, thinking Molly would give him a hard time.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Scratch describes dinner as "the most important meal of the day, tied with all the other ones."
  • Literal Metaphor: Pete says that thanks to Smile Valley Farm, he now has a Green Thumb... and then shows them his thumb, which has a green discoloration. It grosses out the others.
    Molly: Oh geez!
    Sharon: WHAT DID YOU DO?!
    Scratch: Why is it green?!
    Darryl: GO TO THE DOCTOR!
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Molly reveals she knew Scratch got into the game all along, but wanted him to admit it himself. She even states that she expected him to come out in only five minutes rather than five hours, pointing out how stubborn he is.
  • Shout-Out: Smile Valley Farm pays tribute to town life simulation games like Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, and Animal Crossing, with the games' overall look taking an especially big page from the latter.
  • Slow-Loading Internet Image: Scratch tries to play the Smile Valley Farm game in the Ghost World, but the computers there are VERY slow.
  • Tempting Fate: After Daryll makes a load of money off his figurine, Sharon states she would be able to triple what Daryll made by holding until the price goes way up. Of course, Daryll warns her that this line of thinking is going to bite her. When Molly and Scratch get bored of the game, Sharon begins to panic as she claims it's just those two that got bored and shouldn't affect her sales. Sure enough, everybody loses interest in "Smile Valley Farm", resulting in Sharon's figures taking a nose dive before she can sell.
  • Time for Plan B: Once again, Scratch produces a B-shaped hand puppet that talks him into doing plan B — in this case, hide his love of Smile Valley Farm from Molly.
