Tropes present in this episode:

  • #1 Dime: The two thieves claim that the car is worthless but has sentimental value to them, being the car they drove on their honeymoon. Actually it's valuable because they hid two big bags of stolen gold dust behind the dashboard and they want it back.
  • Artistic License – Sports: Boss, as the only official of Hazzard, would never be allowed to also be in the race considering that the first prize of $10,000 is being paid from Hazzard funds and Boss is also collecting the entrance fees. Rosco, the only law enforcement in Hazzard, calls the race over the CB in Boss's car. All this despite them being the people who were collecting the entrance fees for the cars in the race.
  • The Big Race: The Duke boys have an awesome engine they've built but need a car to put it in. They buy what ends up being the General Lee from a junkyard. They enter the Hazzard Rally and win.
  • Birthday Episode: In this episode the Dukes and Cooter celebrate the General Lee's 8th birthday - which is to say, they built it eight years ago today. The bulk of the episode is a Flashback to what happened then.
  • Cassandra Truth: Rosco, as usual, doesn't believe the Dukes when the report being shot at in broad daylight.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Daisy doesn't do to well her first day working at the Boar's Nest: she gets several orders wrong and ends up spilling beer all over Boss Hogg twice.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Boss wears googles when driving in the big race, but he wears them on his forehead.
  • Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow: Boss has more hair in this flashback than he does in the present day and it's dark instead of gray. He's also not as portly. Rosco sports a big Porn Stache. Rosco bets the Dukes that if they win the race he'll shave it off.
  • Here We Go Again!: The Framing Device begins and ends with Rosco and Boss Hogg chasing Bo & Luke.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: Bo and Luke squeeze their eyes closed and turn their heads as they're forced by circumstance to try to jump Hazzard Creek in the General Lee for the first time. They don't expect to make it over or possibly even survive the attempt.
  • Origins Episode: The beginnings of the General Lee are explained, including why it's orange, along with why Daisy works for Boss and the mortgage on the Duke farm.
  • Rambling Old Man Monologue: While working under the car Uncle Jesse tells a funny story from back when he and Boss Hogg were running shine together. A commotion happens outside the garage and everyone else goes out to deal with it; Jesse, not knowing about the commotion, continues with his story. After the problem outside is dealt with only Cooter comes back inside just as Jesse is finishing the story.
Cooter: [wearily] "That's a good one Uncle Jesse."
  • Riddle for the Ages: As of the flashback the Duke boys are already "on probation," we never get to see how that happened.
  • Surprise Party: To Bo and Luke the celebration is a surprise when they get back to the Duke farm, but Daisy, Jesse and Cooter have set it up.
    Cooter: Happy birthday!
Bo: Y'all are a couple of months early, ain't ya?
Daisy: It's not for you! Lookit! [shows them the birthday cake with "Happy Birthday General Lee" on it]
  • 13 Is Unlucky: Boss's car in the big race is #13.
  • Waking Non Sequitur: Rosco is guarding Boss's car the night before the big race, and is asleep on top of it. When Boss comes over to wake Rosco up, he shouts "Santa Claus is gonna steal my-! Oh, Boss. It's you."
  • Wham Shot: For Bo and Luke in the flashback, the first time they end up jumping the General Lee over the creek. They just can't believe it themselves. Of course we the viewers have been seeing that particular leap since the first episode; it's even in the opening credits.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Except for the opening and closing scenes, the entire episode is set eight years prior to the present day (i.e., 1976), with the characters simply dressing/acting younger to create the illusion.
  • Who's on First?: Boss and Rosco are flummoxed when the Dukes refer to General Lee entering the race, since to them "General Lee" refers to Robert E. Lee. They haven't encountered the car General Lee yet.
Boss: Jesse Duke, don't tell me you think you can beat anybody in that piece of junk [pickup truck] you just pulled up in.
Daisy: No, we're entering the General Lee Boss.
Boss: "General Lee?" Honey, General Lee is dead.
