Recap / The Dukes Of Hazzard S 6 E 4 Brotherly Love

Go To

Tropes present in this episode:

  • An Aesop: Shortly after Bo rescues the bad guys from drowning after a terrible accident, Waylon Jennings wryly comments that Tex (the gambler who had bet against Jud) had lost all his money because of a Duke, but he didn't lose the most valuable thing he had - his life - thanks to a Duke too.
  • Baby Be Mine: We learn that Luke's brother Jud had been killed in a hospital fire shortly after birth. But it turns out that a nurse had saved him from the fire and, not being able to have children of her own, she had moved to the next town over and raised him as her own. Jud only learned of this six months ago as his 'mother' was on her deathbed.
  • Boxing Episode: Even though no boxing actually takes place, there are plenty of references to the sport. Jud is a professional boxer who goes by "Killer King" and Luke's background as a boxer in the Marine Corps also is brought up.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Boss Hogg makes Enos look through all the Wanted Posters to find Jed's, which can't happen because he doesn't have one. However Enos recognizes dirty gambler Tex and his accomplice from those same posters.
  • Distinguishing Mark: To prove that he really is who he says he is Jud says that he has a birthmark that he'll show Luke "if they young lady [Daisy] will turn her back for a minute." Luke has the same birthmark in the same location.
  • Drink-Based Characterization: In addition to the birthmark, both Luke and Jud hate buttermilk and prefer to drink black coffee with their apple pie.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Boss Hogg once again shows that, as corrupt as he is, he does not cotton to people being injured or killed.
Narrator: [Boss] figures if you've got to be violent to be crooked, you're trash.
  • Every Car Is a Pinto: Jud's car, driven by Luke, is run off the road by the bad guys and explodes on impact. Fortunately Luke jumped out as it was flying through the air so he "only" got a concussion.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Jud to Luke and by extension the rest of the Duke clan. Despite having not seen each other for their whole lives, Luke is willing to help Jud evade the gambler who is after him without question.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Jud goes by "Killer King" in the boxing ring. Boss Hogg and Rosco think the name means he's an actual killer and want to capture him for the (nonexistent) reward.
  • Never Found the Body: Jud was assumed to be killed in a hospital fire as a baby but as Jessie says they "never found the remains."
  • One-Shot Character: With the bad guys locked up Jud goes back to his pro boxing career. The Dukes say he's welcome back any time, and Jud says he'll stop by whenever he can, but this was his only episode.
  • P.O.V. Cam: When Luke leaves the hospital after learning that the bad guys have kidnapped Jud we see things from his point of view, all blurry due to his concussion.
  • Private Detective: Not present in the episode itself, but Jud says that once he learned the truth he spent every dollar he had on a private detective to find his real family. Looks like it was successful.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Downplayed. Luke is on a first-name basis with an ambulance driver at the hospital whom we've never seen before. Luke talks him into joining the chase. The ambulance driver reluctantly agrees, saying "I guess I owe you a couple of favors."
  • Rock Star Parking: The three cars parked right outside the hospital's emergency entrance are the General Lee, Daisy's Jeep, and Jessie's pickup truck.
  • Speak in Unison: Luke asks Daisy for some coffee to drink and Jud requests some too. Then they both say "Black."
  • Tap on the Head: Luke suffers a concussion after jumping out of a car which was going over a cliff. He's unconscious for a while in the hospital and even after he wakes up he's dizzy and out of it, but not so much that he doesn't leave the hospital when he learns that Jud is in danger. However, he can't drive and Bo and the ambulance driver keep him from jumping into the lake to rescue Jud once the car he was in crashes into it, since Luke would do more harm than good in his condition.
  • Throwing the Fight: Why Jud is in trouble. Dirty gambler Tex tried to force him to throw a boxing match and had bet heavily against him. Jud refused and knocked out his opponent in the first round.
  • Trapped in a Sinking Car: The bad guys, who have kidnapped Jud and are holding him at gunpoint, are being chased by the Dukes when the driver of the bad guys' car loses control, flips over and crashes into a lake. Bo jumps into the lake and rescues both the villains and Jed Just in Time.
