"Bring terror to Del Bar! to Neolandia! to Evenere! to Duren!"

Ezran rides a banther into town and helps Claudia find a spell component. Claudia deceives everyone about the costs of using dark magic to heal her brother Soren's broken back. Callum continues dreaming in a stupor after his first use of dark magic. Prompted by a memory of his mother telling him to breath, Callum wakes up understanding the primal magic of sky. Prince Ezran decides he'll return to Katolis to fulfill his duties as king, which causes the party to separate. Callum and Rayla continue through Xadia to return Zym to the Dragon Queen, while Ezran and Corvus return to Katolis. Viren is charged with treason for using the King's seal illegally. The Startouch elf Aaravos, trapped in a magic mirror, agrees to help Viren. Viren uses smoke magic to resurrect the shadows of the four fallen Moonshadow elf assassins and sends them to kill the rulers of the other human kingdoms. Katolis sends guards to capture Viren, and he is arrested after putting up a fight by channeling Aaravos' magic.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Aborted Declaration of Love: Rayla seems like she's about to do this to Callum before he wakes up from his dark magic-induced dream. She immediately changes subjects once he regains consciousness.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Rayla gives Ezran's hair a good ruffle before they part ways.
  • Animal Eye Spy: Ezran can see through Zym's eyes, and uses that to teach him to fly.
  • Bambification: Claudia kills a young deer offscreen for the power to heal Soren.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Callum does what everyone (except for he himself) considered impossible throughout the history of the setting. He, a human, casts primal magic without using a primal stone. As he tries to explain to Rayla, this is because his Vision Quest taught him that the entire world is a primal stone.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Ezran decides to return home and assume the throne for the good of his people, taking Bait and Corvus with him. Callum and Rayla continue into Xadia with Zym.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Rayla and Callum finding themselves face to face with one of the five remaining archdragons, the Sun Dragon Sol Regem, as soon as they cross into Xadia. Meanwhile, Viren is arrested for his crimes with Aaravos' familiar inside his head, Pip flees in the commotion, and Ezran is returning home to take his place as the king with Corvus as his bodyguard.
  • Crashing Dreams: Callum's fever dream fades over from his mother embracing him to Rayla embracing him when he wakes up.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: With Aaravos channeling Primal Magic through him, Viren is practically unstoppable, killing most of the guards sent to arrest him. He even tanks an arrow to his leg, and appears ready to just keep going before Aaravos stops him.
  • Dreaming the Truth: After waking from his fever dream, Callum announces that he now understands the Sky Arcanum.
  • Enlightenment Superpowers: After learning of his Dream-Crushing Handicap, Callum believes if he can gain an understanding of one of the Arcanums, he can draw on that specific power, basically forging a connection like the elves and magical creatures have naturally. After his Vision Quest from using Dark Magic, he realizes that the whole planet itself is like one giant Sky Primal Stone. He understands all there is of Sky and this allows him to use Sky magic without a primal stone.
  • False Flag Operation: Viren creates warrior elves via dark magic and sends them out to bring terror over the other human kingdoms in order to convince them that Xadia is a real threat after all.
  • Foreshadowing: Callum's line "I am the wing" becomes this when at the end of Book 3.
  • Hope Spot: Ezran and Claudia encounter each other and start bonding, with the slightest hint of a Heel–Face Turn for the latter, but then she goes and kills a young deer in order to gain the Dark Magic needed to cure Soren's paralysis.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: Two of the guards are killed by Aaravos's magic this way through Viren. One is ice while the other is stone before being shattered like glass.
  • Love Epiphany: Rayla experiences one while fearing she'd lose Callum to his dark magic coma leading to her Aborted Declaration of Love when he wakes up.
  • Motivated by Fear: Discussed by Aaravos who tells Viren that if Viren could not convince the leaders of the other kingdoms through love, they should then be motivated by fear. Cue Viren initiating a False Flag Operation for this purpose.
  • Mutually Exclusive Magic: Subverted. Not only is Callum, a human, capable of using primal magic, but Aaravos, an elf, seems to be capable of using dark magic in addition to all forms of primal magic.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: With no foreshadowing, Ezran is suddenly able to communicate with the Dragon Prince over a distance.
  • Out of the Frying Pan: Rayla and Callum cross the border into Xadia, only to immediately run into the Archdragon Sol Regem.
  • Symbolic Serene Submersion: Callum has a bad dream in which he slowly and symbolically submerges in a pool of water.
  • Title Drop: The episode title is said by Queen Sarai in a dream to help Callum.
  • Weird Moon: Downplayed in that the moon is a waning crescent, which is appropriate for how much time has passed. Nonetheless, in reality a waning crescent moon rises in the east shortly before dawn; the moon in this episode is a waning crescent in the west (behind Callum, Rayla, and Zym) just before the sun is about to rise in the east (in front of them).
  • Wham Episode: Oh, so much. The Power Trio is broken as Ezran decides to go home and accept his title as king, the heroes finally cross into Xadia, Aaravos looks to be taking over as the next Big Bad, Claudia is slipping further into dark magic, and Callum becomes the first human to use primal magic.
  • Willing Channeler: Viren does something of the kind when fighting the guards, allowing Aaravos to channel his magic through Viren's body.
