After accidentally ruining the other Titans' fun with her ignorance, Starfire asks Raven to help her become smarter. She then ruins the other Titans' fun with her intelligence.

Tropes

  • Art Shift: Raven's song to Starfire about metaphors is done in the style of Schoolhouse Rock!.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Raven insists that knowledge is power, and that Starfire learning everything will not make her a bummer. Soon after Starfire gains intelligence, there's a montage of her ruining Raven's fun in various ways, causing Raven to agree that Starfire has indeed become a bummer.
  • Dumb Is Good: The viewpoint Robin tries to enforce on his teammates. He claims the less a person knows, the more admirable and socially attractive they become and uses Raven as knowing far too much to be popular. The truth is, Raven does know how to be popular and make others like you using a song glamorizing the use of metaphors in your speech, she just chooses not to engage in this type of behavior because of her Goth-like Broken Bird Dark and Troubled Past personality.
  • Eye Scream: Starfire's trouble with metaphors backfires on Beast Boy when he says he wants to go on a blind date.
  • Fainting: Robin faints when he does the math and discovers the next perfect beach day won't be for 24 years.
  • "Fantastic Voyage" Plot: Raven uses her magic to conjure up a ship that shrinks down so the Titans can get in Starfire's head.
  • Ignored Epiphany: At the end of the episode, after returning Starfire to normal intelligence, Raven admits that she shouldn't have used magic to change who Starfire is. Instead, she claims she should've given Starfire a proper education with textbooks and protractors instead of a mere "Schoolhouse Rock!" Lesson, causing the other Titans to yell at Raven to stop trying to make Starfire smart.
  • Instant Costume Change: Robin casually sprays on a new shirt after he tore up the one he was wearing, all cause he wanted to show off his beach bod.
  • Literal-Minded: Starfire's trouble with literal mindedness troubles her once again. It's also how the Titans defeat Starfire's brain, by defeating it with ignorance.
  • My Brain Is Big/My Skull Runneth Over: Starfire's brain grows to enormous size as she absorbs all knowledge in the world.
  • Nerd Glasses: Smart!Starfire wears these after putting on the pendant. Her brain wears the same thing.
  • Quarantine with Extreme Prejudice: Robin starts off quarantining Starfire, working his way up to himself...all because Starfire yawned. The Titans all end up falling asleep anyways and missing their perfect beach day.
  • "Schoolhouse Rock!" Lesson: Raven teaches Starfire how to understand metaphors using one, complete with an appropriate Art Shift.
  • Screaming at Squick: The boys have this reaction to Starfire's big brain.
  • Shout-Out: The book Raven is reading, Tale of Flame and Snow, is pretty much A Song of Ice and Fire.
  • Spoiler: Smart!Starfire spoils Raven's fun by not only spoiling her book, but also by telling her she's too old to play Pretty Pretty Pegasus.
  • Wearing a Lampshade on Your Head: Raven is wearing one during a flashback of when Starfire threw the stereo out the window...because Beast Boy said it was the bomb.
