Recap / SPY×FAMILY - Anime: S01 E01

In a world set during the Cold War, intelligence is paramount, and spies are the unsung heroes fighting to prevent the war from becoming hot. Twilight, a Master of Disguise and espionage, is tasked with a challenging mission to uncover Donavan Desmond, a far-right political party member in the Ostania government, who may be planning to upset the fragile peace between the two countries. To meet his target, Twilight must marry and have a child within one week due to the fast approaching entrance exams.

Twilight adopts the alias Loid Forger and goes to an orphanage to adopt a child without questions asked. He finds a strange but seemingly intelligent young girl named Anya, who has a secret: she is an esper experimented on by government scientists for their Cold War efforts. Anya takes up the role of Loid's new daughter, but tensions rise between the two as Loid realizes that Anya isn't quite the child prodigy he had intended.

When Loid returns home, he finds two intruders lying in wait and wonders if he leaked his information to his enemies. Realizing Anya has been kidnapped by this group, Twilight considers abandoning her and starting the mission fresh. However, one of the thugs attacks him from behind, and Anya is held hostage by a government official. The thug that attacked Twilight appears to have taken down the spy and placed him in the bag, and the politician opens the bag to see the face of the man he was just talking to. Twilight has come to take his daughter back!

In the confusion, Twilight takes Anya out of the warehouse, internally reprimanding himself for putting his daughter in danger.

Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Anya wanted to have an adventure, and asks Loid if she can have a gun with a silencer. When she accidentally sends a message to one of Twilight's enemies, she's kidnapped - and Anya quickly finds herself completely out of her depth, seeing the "bad guy" kill one of his thugs with a silenced gun.
  • Blackmail: Twilight is introduced to the series while conducting a mission to recover some unflattering pictures of an Ostanian politician that is very useful to Westalis (said politician wears a toupee and the picture show his bald spot).
  • Booby Trap: Twilight sets up a trip rope for the baddies to engulf the room in smoke so he can take them out more easily.
  • Bound and Gagged: Happens to Anya at the hands of the thugs.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Downplayed, but when Twilight-disguised-as-Nguyen returns to Edgar, he takes the time to comment on Twilight's skill.
  • Butt-Dialing Mordor: After Twilight sabotages Edgar's Blackmail attempt of a pacifist Ostanian politician, by destroying pictures of said politician's bald spot and toupée, Twilight is assigned to Operation Strix, where he is to pose as family man Loid Forger, and he adopts Anya. When he steps out for an intelligence briefing, Twilight locks Anya in their apartment, where she gets into Twilight's spy gear, and after messing around with a communications device, she unknowingly sends a taunting message to Edgar and she's kidnapped by his goons, who hold her for ransom, asking for the blackmail pictures back, and Twilight has to go rescue her.
  • *Click* Hello: Twilight does this to Edgar from behind in the climax.
  • Clung on Tight: When Twilight tries to get Anya back to the orphanage at the end, she clings to his leg and starts crying.
  • Creepy Child: Subverted by Anya. She's a cheerful girl but the man that runs the orphanage she's in thinks she's creepy.
  • Damsel in Distress: Twilight has to rescue Anya from Edgar and his goons after she unknowingly sent a taunting message using Twilight's spy gear.
  • Dinner and a Breakup: After accomplishing his mission, Twilight, who is going by the name of Robert, is on a date with his girlfriend, Karen, the daughter of the criminal who attempted to blackmail the Ostanian politician. Karen believes Robert took her to a fancy restaurant to propose, only for him to dump her, by telling her that she's simply too dumb to know how to hold a conversation and walks out, where he throws the blackmail pictures in a flaming trashcan.
  • Escaped from the Lab: Anya's backstory. How exactly she did that and ended up at the orphanage is unknown.
  • Flashback: When Twilight carries crying Anya out of the warehouse, he has a flashback to his childhood where he stands abandoned and crying in the street.
  • Goroawase Number: The pin number to Twilight's spy gear is 6110. One way the code can be pronounced in Japanese is ro-i-to, aka Loid.
  • Harmful to Minors: Anya is the unwilling witness of a man being killed with a headshot.
  • Honey Trap: As a spy, Twilight has to do what he can to accomplish his mission, and while posing as the secretary of a politician that was the target of a blackmail attempt, he started dating Karen, the daughter of the blackmailer, Edgar. This allowed him to get close enough to the gang to know their M.O. and to flawlessly impersonate Edgar during the blackmail pictures-money exchange. Once Twilight got the pictures, he took Karen to a fancy restaurant where he unceremoniously dumped her and disposed of the pictures when he left.
  • Parental Abandonment: Anya was adopted and returned to the orphanage four times before Twilight turned up.
  • Replacement Goldfish: A human variation that is discussed and averted. After Edgar and his goons kidnap Anya and hold her for ransom, asking for the blackmail pictures in return, Twilight considers abandoning Anya to her fate and going back to the orphanage for another kid to help him accomplish his mission, but decides not to because of his oath to make the world safe so that no child would suffer like he did, and goes to rescue her.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Despite her powers, Anya mostly thinks like a typical child, and at first fails to understand the real world is not like her favorite spy-themed TV show.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: A non-lethal variation is shown near the beginning of the episode. Twilight, who's going by Robert, takes Karen, his girlfriend, on a date to a fancy restaurant where she thinks he'll propose to her, only for Robert to bluntly tell her she's too dumb to know how to hold a meaningful conversation and dumps her right there and then. Having acquired, and destroyed, the Blackmail pictures of the pacifist Ostanian politician, Twilight figured that rudely breaking up with her was the best way to tie that loose end of that mission, since he only needed her to get as close to Edgar, her father, as possible in order to impersonate him when it came time to get the pictures.
