Good plan for a snowball fight
"BREW" - The Tempest Arc is the eleventh major story arc in Soul Eater. This arc documents the battle between the DWMA and Arachnophobia on Lost Island, Alaska, to acquire BREW, a Demon Tool created by the sorcerer Eibon.

"Brew" - The Tempest Arc" contains examples of:

  • Brandishment Bluff: When 'BREW' is revealed to have been damaged beyond repair after spending 800 years inside the magnetic field, rendering it worthless, Arachne decides to use the very possession of BREW as a weapon in and of itself as long as the DWMA doesn't know BREW is broken. (no one knew the BREW they has was replaced with a fake by Medusa's faction during the battle)
  • The Chessmaster: Medusa knew that Lord Death was going to send Stein and Marie to the island to retrieve brew so she used the spy snake she had Crona plant in Marie cause Stein to lose his sanity in the middle of the mission, allowing Eruka and the Mizane sisters to retrieve Brew and replace it with a fake with no one the wiser.
  • Crazy-Prepared:
    • Arachane prepared for the worst case scenario and decides to bluff about BREW as the DWMA doesn't know its broken to keep them frightened.
    • Medusa knew Lord Death would send Stein and Marie and prepared for that before hand by using the snake planted in Marie's body by Crona to put Stein into a fit of madness, allowing the Mizune sisters to get BREW and replace it with a fake to fool anyone who got to it.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Eruka remarks how Arachne never thought of planting any surveillance spiders inside the magnetic field before the explosion, allowing her to swap out the real BREW with the fake replica they made, allowing the Mizunes to get the real one with her completely unaware the version of it she has is just a fake
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": The little demon calls the title character soul eater by his true last name, Evans
Soul: "Don't call me by that name, dammit"
  • Godzilla Threshold: Soul decides to play the piano in his soul so his team can use resonance link, which would otherwise be impossible given the magnetic field is too strong for that to work. The piano is symbolic of soul using the black blood for resonance again, this time risking spreading it to the others a well.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: Inside the magnetic field around the facility, this is in place as the events of the day of the explosion are on constant repeat as an illusion of the past, since the explosion was magical in nature, allowing this to be possible.
  • Hair-Trigger Avalanche: Invoked by Justin Law to his advantage against Girko and his team, although this may have been an accident caused by his music being too loud from his snow mobile.
  • Intangible Time Travel: being inside the magnetic field you get to see a flashback of the events of the day of the explosion destroying the facility, similar to A Christmas Carol, they can see the events but not interfere with them nor are anyone in in visions aware of their presence.
  • It's All My Fault: Stein reassures Marie that the failure of the mission and any harm thats comes to the students is his fault for falling into the madness (little does he know its actually Medusas fault)
  • Laughing Mad: As part of Steins Sanity Slippage he laughs quite maddeningly due to the snake Medusa had Crona plant inside Marie to spike his insanity as well as spy on him.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: In the English dub, during a mission that takes place in a magnetic field that turns you into a memory after 20 minutes: "Come on, we've got to prioritize, this show's only got 10 minutes left!" There happened to be 10 minutes left in the episode, too.
  • MacGuffin: Brew The tempest is this for the arc as everyone is trying to get their hands on it, the DWMA, Arachnafobia, and Medusa. Medusa ultimately gets it in the end and replaces it with a fake for good measure.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Arachne wanted to keep BREW for herself so she had the factory explosion planned to look like an accident to trick Lord Death and the other witches into thinking BREW was destoryed so she could come back to reclaim it later, knowing BREW would be too powerful to be destroyed by an explosion, even one strong enough to cause a giant magnetic field.
  • Next Tier Power-Up: Of a new technique variety, Maka was able to use witch hunter with regular soul resonance before, but now thanks to Soul playing with piano in his own soul (symbolic of using the black blood to enhance the soul resonance rate) she unlocks the more powerful version of it, the genie hunter.
  • Island of Mystery: a mild case, the island is called lost island and was the cite for a massive explosion hundreds of years ago that caused a huge magnetic storm in the center of the island. The storm itself replays the explosion repeatedly, being stuck in a time loop that doesn't effect the characters when inside it. You can't stay in the storm for too long or you become part of the loop forever as a result
  • Sanity Slippage: Stein was already losing his grip before this mission but using soul resonance with Marie while she still had Medusa's snake inside her was causing him to fall prey to his madness quicker in the middle of the mission.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Giriko pulls this off when it becomes clear he can't beat Justin Law, making snow replicas of himself as a distraction to get away.
  • Shout-Out: Only seeing a vision of the past and unable to interact with it, and the vision being unaware of you at all, A Christmas Carol anyone?
  • Stealth Pun: the witches ultimate weapon is called B.R.E.W.
  • Time Loop Trap: if anyone stays in the magnetic field for longer than 20 minutes, they then become part of the illussion on repeat. even the effects of the field take time to wear off once you leave the field, making returning after 20 minutes suicide.
  • Wham Line: "He's here, Eibon" though this is only for Kid, who is becoming more suspicious of his fathers past with Eibon.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Stein invokes this as Marie plans to go back into the magnetic field to get Maka's team out, pointing out that the effects of the field are still on her and just stepping out for a few seconds won't make them go away instantly to replenish her 20 minute mark, like you normally would in a video game.
