Recap / Shadows over Meridian, Chapter 2: The return of the queen part 2

Go To

Both the Infinite City and the royal castle are under the attack of the Shadowkhan. As Elyon tries to repel the attackers, Vathek, Tynar and the prisoners are confronted by Jade who has a shocking announcement to make.

  • Alarm SOS: Elyon is woken to the invasion by the ringing of alarm bells.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: The castle is under the onslaught of the Samurai and Bat Khan, while the Ninja Khan subdue all the guards in the Infinite City so that Jade can sneak in to speak with Phobos and his minions unnoticed.
  • Badass Boast: The chapter ends with Jade introducing herself in her new identity in a way that leaves everyone present stunned.
Jade: [using a loud voice as her red eyes glow and a chilling wind blows] I am Hisuikage no oni, last member of the warrior Oni race, [starts floating up] ruler of the Shadow realm and mistress of the nine warrior tribes that inhabitant it. I am who is and always will be… The Queen of the Shadowkhan.
  • Call-Back:
    • With Vathek subdued, Jade brings up the beginning of their antagonistic relationship when he had her in chains in that same place and called her a beast.
    • Jade and Phobos acknowledge that they've never properly spoken to one another before (though he mentions that while he saw her working with the Knights during their attempt to return him to power, they didn't have a chance to get properly acquainted).
  • Cassandra Truth: Vathek still continues refusing to believe any of Jade's words about herself and Nerissa's deception.
  • Cliffhanger: Jade shocks everyone as she introduces herself as the Queen of the Shadowkhan.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The Samurai Khan escorts accompanying Jade to the prison are carrying banners depicting either Tarakudo's face or the emblem she used during her first time as the Queen.
    • The end of Jade's Badass Boast introduction is a reference to her first canon transformation into the Shadowkhan Queen; she was floating while a wind blew then as well and told her family that she is, and shall remain, the Queen of the Shadowkhan.
  • Dope Slap: Jade slaps Vathek upside the head before telling him she's not Phobos' lackey.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Elyon, Aldarn and Drake are surrounded by the Shadowkhan, she tries to think on how to repel the "shadow monsters". The word shadow gives her the idea to blast bursts of bright magic on all sides, dissipating this wave of attackers.
  • Flat "What": Tynar has this reaction when Jade reveals that Nerissa was the Mage all along.
  • Holding Your Shoulder Means Injury: After Elyon's balcony gets blown up, Aldarn holds his left shoulder.
  • Internal Reveal: Not only Jade finally confirms to Vathek and Tynar that she's not a creation of Phobos, but she also tells them, the other Knights and Phobos what she knows about Nerissa's manipulations.
  • In the Back: A Bat Khan grabs Drake and starts choking him before Aldarn dissolves it by stabbing its back.
  • Meaningful Rename: To symbolize her Split-Personality Merge, Jade takes as her full name "Hisuikage no oni", which means "demon of jade shadow" in Japanese.
  • Oh, Crap!: Phobos calling Jade a royal fills Vathek and Tynar with dread.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Phobos surprises everyone by acting politely and kindly towards Jade/Kage to the point of apologizing for the way his sister and her followers have treated her ever since she first came to Meridian.
  • Pet the Dog: Though he's acting in the name of his own self-interests, Phobos treats Jade with unexpected civility and congratulates Raythor for having made an ally out of her.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Phobos is the first one to figure out that Jade is royalty, so he takes a civil approach with her in order to get closer to reclaiming his throne.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: When Vathek calls Phobos Jade's master, she makes a point of correcting him slowly:
    Jade: I...do…not…work...for Phobos!
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Elyon opts to take part in defending her castle instead of sitting back.
  • Spotting the Thread: Everyone quickly figures out that Jade is responsible for the Shadowkhan attack due to their physical similarities, but Drake takes it further by questioning that if Jade really is a unique experiment of Phobos like they were told, where the others came from and why the prince never used them during his reign or even his recent escape attempt.
  • Stunned Silence: Jade's bombshell of Nerissa and the Mage being one and the same renders everyone silent until Tynar breaks it with a Flat "What".
  • This Means War!: Raythor deduces that the presence of a Shadowkhan troop possibly searching for Jade indicates she could be someone of great importance among her people. This makes him worry if the Guardians and rebels' hostility towards Jade have sparked a war with another world.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When Phobos assesses to Jade that she was more than everyone assumed, she replies that people tend to underestimate her only to regret it later.
  • Zerg Rush: As Tynar puts it, two new Shadowkhan seem to fill the place of everyone taken down. This enables them to keep the castle's defenders on their toes and eventually overwhelm all of the Infinite City's wardens.
