Recap / Rugrats S 7 E 5 Finsterella

Go To

The fifth episode of the seventh season of Rugrats (1991).

When the adults get ready to throw a party to celebrate Chas and Kira respectively adopting Kimi and Chuckie, Chuckie fears that Kira and Kimi are going to be mean to him, like Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters were to her.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Baby See, Baby Do: Kimi plays a game where she decides to copy whoever she sees. She first copies her pet poodle, Fifi, by scratching herself and licking Chuckie's face, then she later imitates Angelica's behavior, which leads the babies to believe that she's being mean to Chuckie, like Cinderella's stepsisters.
  • Baby's First Words: Chuckie's first word he says to the grown-ups is "No", which he previously said in Rugrats in Paris to prevent Chas from marrying Coco LaBouche. In this episode, "No" is all he says to the grown-ups regardless of whether or not it makes sense in that context.
  • Cinderella Plot: After Chas tells the babies the story of Cinderella, Angelica tells Chuckie that he has a stepmother and a stepsister just like Cinderella does, and decides to start calling him "Finsterella". Tommy tries to assure Chuckie that Kira and Kimi are nice to him, and not mean like Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters, but Chuckie starts to believe Angelica is right when he overhears Kira rehearsing her lines for a play about The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe and sees Kimi copying Angelica's behavior when she plays a game where she copies whoever she sees. Chuckie also has a dream where he really is Finsterella, and has to do chores for Angelica and Kimi while they get to go to a party. By the end of the episode, Chuckie finds out the truth about Kira and Kimi, who both love him very much and are happy to be a part of his family.
  • Continuity Nod: As this episode takes place after Rugrats in Paris, certain events from the movie are alluded to, such as Chuckie preventing Chas from marrying Coco.
  • Exploding Closet: When the babies search for Chuckie so they can invite him to the party, they open his closet door, and an avalanche of toys fall out.
  • Extra-Long Episode: This episode is a full 22-minute one.
  • Fractured Fairy Tale: Defied; Chuckie (as Finsterella) answers the door to Phil and Lil as Hansel and Gretel, looking for directions (inspired by the twins fighting over the book earlier in the episode). He replies: "You're even more lost than you think; you're in the wrong story."
  • Good Stepmother: Chuckie initially worries that Kira will be mean to him, like Cinderella's stepmother was to her. She turns out to be very nice and caring. This episode even has her legally adopting Chuckie, and likewise, Chas legally adopts her daughter Kimi.
  • Happily Adopted: This episode ends with Chas and Kira respectively adopting Kimi and Chuckie. Chuckie then says that he's glad they're a family now.
  • Malaproper: The babies mispronounce "Godmother" as "Bobmother".
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: Kira is cast as The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe for a play at the children's nursery rhyme theater. She tells Chas, Marvin and Shirley that the role is a challenge for her, given her own kindly demeanor, but whenever she needs inspiration, she just thinks of her old boss, Coco LaBouche. When Chuckie overhears her rehearsing her lines, he worries that she's being mean to him like Cinderella's stepmother.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Chuckie tells his friends that although he likes having Kimi as a new stepsister, she doesn't always respect his personal space; she walks into the bathroom when he's trying to use the toilet, goes through his stuff, jumps on his stomach while he's trying to sleep, and climbs onto Chas' leg when he's already there.
  • Sinister Sweet Tooth: In Chuckie's dream sequence where Angelica and Kimi take on the roles of his mean stepsisters, Angelica makes him make her and Kimi cookies, cake, jelly beans, and ice cream with chocolate syrup, cherries, and sprinkles for breakfast.
  • Trash of the Titans: Although Chuckie likes having Kimi as a stepsister, he doesn't appreciate how she left his bedroom a mess since she moved in. When Chuckie overhears Kira rehearsing her lines, he feels like he has to clean the mess by himself.
  • The Unfavorite: Chuckie feels this way when he overhears Kira rehearsing her lines, believing that she treats Kimi better than him.
  • Universal-Adaptor Cast: This episode gives Chuckie a lengthy Dream Sequence where he is in the role of Finsterella, Kimi and Angelica are his bossy stepsisters, and Tommy is his "fairy bob-brother".
  • Wicked Stepmother: Chuckie imagines that Kira will be evil, complete with a Cinderella-esque Dream Sequence. Not helping is that he overhears Kira rehearsing her lines for a play of The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, with her in the role of the titular old woman. Thankfully, Kira subverts the trope not only by being very nice but also by legally adopting Chuckie.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: In Chuckie's dream sequence, he asks Tommy, who takes on the role of his fairy "Bobbrother" to help him. Tommy tells Chuckie that he doesn't need his help, reminding him that he stopped Chas from marrying Coco when they went to Paris, and if he can do that, he can do anything. When Chuckie awakens from his nap, he gets the courage to go to the party without anyone trying to stop him.
