Recap / Regular Show S 06 E 27 Lunch Break

Go To

Benson treats his workers to lunch at a prestigious sandwich shop, and Mordecai and Rigby find themselves in over their head when they order the number 46 (a very long party sub) and are forced to eat it or else be fired. While the duo eat it, they think back to other eating challenges they've done (which, strangely, doesn't include the omelet challenge from "Eggscellent").

Episode Tropes:

  • Aesop Amnesia: As they eat the sandwich Mordecai and Rigby remind each other about other times they have done massive food challenges, as well as how badly it has ended each time, including ending up in the hospital, and losing their TV and video games.
  • Balloon Belly: Midway though the sandwich Mordecai and Rigby are briefly seen with swollen stomachs.
  • Bottle Episode: The episode only has the main characters in one setting (the basketball court), with the focus on Mordecai and Rigby remembering past events.
  • Chocolate-Frosted Sugar Bombs: RGB2io's are apparently so unhealthy that eating a lot of it puts Mordecai and Rigby in the hospital. One of the executives even calls it "borderline poison".
  • Clip Show: Spoofed. The episode plays out like a clip show. However, the material is either flashbacks of their youth or, in the case of the last story, a fantasy that they had to make up on the spot.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Benson allows Mordecai and Rigby to get anything they wanted from the sandwich place; when the duo buy a 3-meter sub that sets him back $85, he forces them to eat the whole thing within a day or else they’re fired (this ignoring the fact that it’s technically his own fault for permitting them to get whatever).
  • Free Prize at the Bottom: Mordecai and Rigby eat every bowl of cereal for a toy RGD2, only to find that the toy is highly disappointing and defective when they end up in hospital from food poisoning; the cereal executives give it to them on the spot and point out how the toys are trash:
Cereal exec 1: Oh, and you can just have one of these (Pulls out an RGB2 toy) They're basically garbage.
  • Jerkass Ball: Benson is at his worst here since "Best Burgers in the World", forcing Mordecai and Rigby to eat a giant sandwich, threatening to fire them if they don't finish it in record time, and even forcing them to complete 50 laps across the newly-constructed field despite clearly being incapacitated.
  • Kick the Dog: Not only does Benson make Mordecai and Rigby eat every last bite of the sandwich in a short amount of time, he threatens to fire them if they don't finish it in record time and then makes them run laps on the basketball court everyone fixed while they ate.
  • Mega Meal Challenge: As well as having to eat the whole party sub, Mordecai and Rigby remember other food challenges they've done in the past (none of which ended well).
  • Moving the Goalposts: Benson makes Mordecai and Rigby eat the entire party sub by the end of the day or they're fired. The two of them barely manage to finish in time and Benson then tells them to break in the new basketball court everyone else worked on while they ate the sub by running laps on it, or they're fired.
  • Never My Fault: Benson is angry at Mordecai and Rigby for ordering the $85 sandwich, ignoring that he not only promised them anything they wanted but wasn't even obligated to buy it for them in the first place.
  • Noodle Incident: Benson has a broken leg, and it's implied it's because of the old basketball court.
  • Sore Loser: Benson is utterly livid that Mordecai and Rigby managed to finish the sandwich in time. He makes another attempt to get them fired by making them do 50 laps around the new basketball court as a result.
  • Taking Advantage of Generosity: Benson says he'll buy the employees sandwich they want. So Mordecai and Rigby ask for a very expensive party sub, which naturally infuriates Benson.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: After Mordecai and Rigby finish the sandwich and get themselves sick, Benson states that they deserve a reward, only for him to punish them for leaving the day's work to everyone else by making them run 50 laps around the new basketball court or be fired.
