"Margaret's sweater. She left it here for me to find. I have to give it back to her."
Written and storyboarded by Hilary Florido and Madeline Queripel.

Following the events of "Steak Me Amadeus," Mordecai tries to recover from the depression caused by Margaret dumping him for college life — and Rigby discovers that Mordecai has a hard time letting go when he finds her sweater and goes on a road trip to give it back to her.

Tropes

  • Alone Among the Couples: Mordecai. When he's reading a book to take his mind off being dumped, Mordecai sees that everyone has someone they're in love with. Unable to stand it, he leaves the scene after throwing down the book and giving up.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Mordecai's feathers are treated as hair, with him growing a beard and shaving it off.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Mordecai grows one after losing Margaret.
  • Call-Back: During the Downer Beginning montage, Mordecai sees the back of someone he thinks is Margaret but is actually a human woman with hair similar to hers. He made the same mistake with the same woman in Access Denied.
  • The Corrupter: The sweater comes to life and attempts to pull Mordecai back into his depression by lying about how Margaret would leave college for him if he returned it to her. Not being a Jerkass, Mordecai realizes that would be stupid, since it would mean giving up on the dream she worked super hard for.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Rigby acts like a Jerkass while riding with Mordecai, but only because he doesn't want to see Mordecai go back into a funk falling for Margaret again.
  • Cue the Falling Object: While Mordecai is struggling for control over the car with Margaret's sweater he eventually crashes into a statue. Later he asks Rigby if he thinks Muscle Man will notice the dents, to which he replies he doesn't notice a difference. The statue promptly falls over and crushes the roof.
  • Downer Beginning: Following the events of the previous episode, Mordecai is shown to be wallowing in pity after losing Margaret.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Mordecai fails to understand why Rigby is so hellbent on stopping him from seeing Margaret again. Rigby even points this out.
Rigby: I am your friend. You would realize that, if you weren't such a sad sack CHUMP!
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: The episode begins with a montage of Mordecai being depressed after Margaret leaves, and the Park Crew doing their best to, and succeeding in, getting him over it.
  • Get Out!: Mordecai kicks Rigby out of Muscle Man's car after the latter tries to help him, before calling him a "sad, sack chump".
Rigby: I am your friend. You would realize that, if you weren't such a sad sack CHUMP!
    Mordecai: That's it!
(Mordecai stops the car and shoves Rigby out of the car with his legs as he drives away.)
  • Heroic BSoD: Mordecai begins this episode in this state after Margaret leaves him, the staff do help him recover from it by doing some fun activities to help him get over it.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Muscle Man claims to like his things clean, just as he's wiping grease on his bare chest.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: After Mordecai tricks Rigby into driving with him to Margaret’s college to return her sweater, Rigby throws her sweater out the window and says they’ll have to go back home now because it’s never coming back. Cut to them getting pulled over by a cop, who had picked the sweater up off the road and returns it to them.
Cop: You boys should really be more careful. I've seen too many good clothes lost on this highway, and this is one quality sweater.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: It is true that Rigby is doing his best in every way possible to make sure that Mordecai doesn't meet up with Margaret, however he's doing it for unselfish reasons; if Mordecai succeeded in meeting up with Margaret, it would only make him just as miserable as he was in the start of the episode. Also, Rigby's doing it to protect Mordecai from relapsing into depression. Rigby is also correct in saying that Mordecai did not have to erase Margaret's entire existence from his head, but Mordecai's obsession with Margaret was just plain ridiculous and only serving to hurt him.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: It's left unclear whether the sweater actually came to life and tried to corrupt Mordecai or it was an hallucination born from his obsession and lack of sleep. On one hand only he saw it happen, but he didn't move the sweater from the back seat to the front.
  • Mickey Mousing: Somber music plays as Mordecai is driving to Margaret's college, then abruptly stops when he falls asleep and careens off the road.
  • Previously on…: The episode starts with the ending of "Steak Me Amadeus".
  • Tempting Fate: The ending.
Mordecai: You think Muscle Man will be angry I messed up his car?
Rigby: Nah, it doesn't look much different from usual. *A statue immediately falls on top of Muscle Man's car, wrecking it*
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In an odd twist, Rigby is being kinder than usual by not being kind, as he spends the episode doing his best to shake Mordecai off his obsession before he hurts himself further. And he completely forgives Mordecai for kicking him out of the car after he sees his efforts worked out in the end.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Mordecai has the chance to return Margaret's sweater, and thus restart their relationship, but doesn't go through with it.
  • The World Mocks Your Loss: As if it wasn't bad enough that Mordecai had been unceremoniously dumped by Margaret, when Mordecai tries to take his mind off of her by reading a book, and in that same spot, everyone seems to have somebody that loves them. Mordecai decides to leave the scene rather than stick around, feeling like it's being rubbed in that he'd been dumped.
