Natsume wakes up in the cave which the youkai targeting Taki dragged him to after attacking him at the end of the last episode with a rope around his neck and the youkai poisons him with something which causes Natsume to lose his ability to see youkai and spirits. Natsume has to try to save Taki and himself from the malicious youkai without being able to see it, though he can still hear it.

Tropes associated with the episode:

  • Brought Down to Normal: Natsume looses his ability to see youkai.
  • Calling Your Attacks: At the end of the episode Nishimura calls out, "Nishimura attack." as he runs up to crash his shoulder against Natsume on their way to school.
  • Conveniently Placed Sharp Thing: Natsume breaks the lead on the rope around his neck with a piece of broken wood.
  • Crash-Into Hello: Natsume runs right into Nyanko when fleeing the cave.
  • Cross-Popping Veins: Nyanko gets them a few times, such as when Natsume informs him that his messed up vision has made “Your silly face sillier.”
  • Cuteness Proximity: Taki really really wants to hold Nyanko, though everyone else thinks he’s pretty ugly.
  • Distressed Dude: For a guy with a bodyguard that is supposed to protect him from youkai Natsume sure does have a lot of trouble with the less friendly ones. He is captured right before this episode started and caught again near its climax with another youkai rope around his neck, though this one with a much shorter lead and anchored into the ground. As Madara himself says:
Madara: I would really like to know why you're so easy to trap.
  • Fantastic Racism: The evil youkai hates lowly humans and is disgusted that Natsume can see them without any aid, and while Taki being able to see him and be afraid entertains him he still plans to kill her for looking at him.
  • Grammar Nazi: Chobihige can’t stop correcting the way people talk, especially Madara.
  • Geometric Magic: Taki’s circles which allow normal humans to see youkai.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: The youkai informs Natsume that it intends to eat him and then Taki when its game is through.
  • It's Personal: Nyanko gets more serious about helping to take down the youkai when he ends up targeted by the curse.
  • The Mirror Shows Your True Self: Even with the curse Natsume can see youkai in mirrors, as he discovers when Chobihige walked up right in next to him while he was brushing his teeth.
  • Multi-Part Episode: Second part of a two-parter
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The evil youkai opens its glowing red eyes as it growls that it is going to eat Natsume after he punched it and broke loose from the rope it had its foot on.
  • Rules Lawyer: The youkai counts Taki saying Nyanko as her saying someone’s name even though Nyanko is not Madara’s real name.
  • Secret-Keeper: Taki asked Natsume's help after hearing about his ability from a youkai and has not intention of spreading that knowledge.
  • Supernaturally Delicious and Nutritious: The youkai really wants to eat Natsume due to the power he can sense in him, and Madara brings up that Natsume would make better bait than Taki since he is strong which makes him “smell yummy.”
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: In a fairly literal example as Natsume starts to stand to speak with the youkai that has captured him it stomps on the rope which is tied around his neck which yanks him back down, he ends up trying to run and escape once before breaking the rope to similar effect.
  • You Taste Delicious: To Natsume’s disgust the youkai licks across his neck and face while he has Natsume captured in order to poison him.
