Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S2E21 Zedd's Monster Mash

Go To

It's Halloween, and the Ranger Teens are helping out at the Youth Center. Tommy escorts a group of kiddies dressed like Rangers out to trick-or-treating, only to have them turn out to be Putties. He's no match for them, and ends up sucked into the Dark Dimension. There, facing a Tombstone monster, Tommy is alone against a graveyard filled with formerly-destroyed monsters!

Tropes

  • Back from the Dead: The revived monsters are Snizzard, Pumpkin Rapper, Rhinoblaster, Primator, Robogoat, and the Invenusable Flytrap.
Tommy: I thought we turned you into squash, Pumpkin Rapper.
Pumpkin Rapper: Maybe you did, but it's time to get sad! 'Cause of Lord Zedd's power, we're back and we're bad!
  • Blame Game:
    Bulk: Nice idea, bozo.
Skull: My idea? Nuh-uh, it wasn't my idea, it was your idea, Bulkie!
Bulk: Must you always place the blame, squash-head?
  • Bowdlerize: Doomstone's boney right arm was painted black to hide his skeletal nature (despite having no problems with other skeleton monsters like Bones and Skelerena). The cross on the left side of his body was removed for more obvious reasons.
  • Call-Back: Alpha is sent to chaperone the children that the three Demoted to Extra rangers were looking after due to it being Halloween, so no one would be suspicious. His blending-in also served him well in last season's "Life's a Masquerade".
  • Demoted to Extra: Doomstone's Dairanger counterpart was a recurring nuisance alongside two other monsters and appeared in at least three episodes. Doomstone doesn’t even have that going for him as he up and vanishes after the Pumpkin Rapper grows. The Three Gorma Stooges did have mecha fights, but never separately from each other, and filming a new one with just Doomstone would've been too expensive.
  • Divide and Conquer: Zedd's plan is to isolate and defeat Tommy, as he's certain the other Rangers will fall without him.
  • Enchanted Forest: Zedd's Haunted Forest.
  • Fair-Play Villain: Averted. The villains are thrilled to outnumber the three Rangers and bemoan how Jason, Zack, and Trini showing up makes things fair.
  • For Halloween, I Am Going as Myself:
    • Bulk and Skull believe the Power Rangers have the ability to shrink and are posing as trick-or-treaters.
    • Alpha also uses this to his advantage to go keep an eye on the children that Jason, Zack, and Trini were chaperoning while they go help the other rangers.
  • Foreshadowing: While talking about the upcoming Peace Conference, Kimberly and Billy wonder what would happen to the Power Team if any of their members were chosen to go around the world.
  • Green Around the Gills: Bulk and Skull briefly turned green when Kimberly offer them more candy.
  • Halloween Episode: The third one of the series.
  • Informed Flaw: Kimberly and Billy are worried that Tommy won't stand a chance against the monsters without his morpher. However, from what we see, Tommy does a pretty decent job at kicking monster butt even before the former-mentioned pair arrive. Even then, when they keep knocking back the old monsters, Alpha panics that they're completely surrounded despite a lot of evidence, to the contrary.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: The beginning of the Peace Conference arc.
  • Never Recycle Your Schemes: Goldar's initial suggestion basically amounted to fine-tuning Rita's plan from "Life's a Masquerade": have multiple monsters infiltrate a costume party instead of just send one really tough monster to do it. Zedd ignores this suggestion, preferring his Haunted Forest idea.
  • Out of Focus: Jason, Zack, and Trini don't appear unmorphed. This episode begins the arc of their departure from the show as by this point, their actors were gone, though they would, of course, remain in the intro.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Pumpkin Rapper once again gladly indulges in this.
  • Silence, You Fool!: Zedd's reaction to Baboo getting sidetracked by talking about what kind of costume he wants to wear.
  • Stock Footage: The episode used the Zyu2 footage of the fight with the enlarged Pumpkin Rapper (while editing out the Dino Megazord).
  • This Cannot Be!: Zedd's frustrated response to the Rangers prevailing against multiple monsters at once.
  • Took a Level in Badass: The Pumpkin Rapper was a match for the Thunder Megazord this time; last time they didn't need to use a Megazord at all to beat him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The other monsters; especially Doomstone. We never hear from that key monster again either.
  • You Fool!: Zedd's response to Goldar suggesting they send disguised monsters to the Rangers' party.
