Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S2E20 Opposites Attract

Go To

A centennial magnetic storm is brewing. Billy plans on monitoring it from a scientific perspective. Lord Zedd sends down Goldar and the Putties to disrupt Billy's experiment. Swiping his magnetic monitoring device, Zedd turns it into the evil Magnet Brain monster. He wrecks havoc on the polarity of the city, sending chaos all around with repelling particles abound.

Tropes

  • Big "WHAT?!": Lord Zedd after the Rangers' Power Blaster knocks Magnet Brain up against a warehouse.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Richie and Curtis are gone without explanation after this. Justified, as their respective links to the series, Trini and Zack, were written out and thus they had no reason to remain.
  • Graceful Loser: For once, Zedd is this. He's mildly irritated by Magnet Brain's destruction, but he calmly remarks he should've known better than to try mixing science with his monsters in the first place.
  • Held Gaze: Billy and Laura like each other right away. The camera is not at all subtle about showing this.
  • Mythology Gag: When confronting Magnet Brain, the five Rangers do a pose from Gosei Sentai Dairanger.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Tommy gives Goldar one during their fight in the forest.
  • No-Sell: Magnet Brain gets sent flying into a wall by the Power Blaster but, unlike a lot of Season 1 monsters, is otherwise no worse for wear.
  • Put on a Bus: Played with. While the characters of Jason, Zack, and Trini would remain for the next eight episodes thanks to recycled footage and Fake Shemp voices, Austin St. John, Walter Jones, and Thuy Trang depart here, due to contract disputes; the three of them would remain in the intro for the interim.
  • Pungeon Master: Magnet Brain lets the puns fly while facing the Rangers.
Magnet Brain: I think you'll get a charge out of this.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: "North is south! Up is down! I'm about to trash this town!"
  • Skewed Priorities: Billy wants to go face Goldar in the forest because Laura's in danger. Zordon reminds him that his unique skills would be more useful against the far bigger threat of Magnet Brain.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Billy deserves kudos for knocking Goldar back on his ass while unmorphed.
  • Villain Decay: Goldar, on the other hand, should really be ashamed for not only being knocked back by a kick from the most inexperienced of the original team but also by a ranger who hadn’t even morphed yet.
  • We Will Meet Again: Goldar promises this to Tommy before fleeing.
