Recap / Mao Mao S 1 E 19 Meet Tanya Keys

Go To

While Mao Mao is explaining to Adorabat about the duties of the Sheriff’s Department, he ends up encountering Tanya Keys, who takes Mao Mao and Adorabat to a restaurant to eat some illegal hydra eggs. Once there, Tanya reveals to Mao Mao that she is hunting down Badgerclops and has already captured him, planning to send him to jail. Now, Mao Mao and Adorabat must go after Tanya and save Badgerclops whilst getting past Tanya’s many disguises, but Mao Mao and Adorabat run into issues involving Mao Mao’s desire to protect the king.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Tanya never refers to Mao Mao by his name, she always calls him "Mittens". She even does this when she's doing an impression of him, which could mean something...
    • He specifically said 'friendship' in his apology, so it’s possible they were close enough he didn’t mind the name and she continues using it out of habit.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Tanya calls for a group hug, then she and her truck turn into leaves and the camera pans up to reveal she's already in the air about to take off.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Apart from her unexplained leaf-duplicate-things, Tanya creates a giant anchor which then transforms back into several leaves, when she only used five.
    • Not to mention some of those 5 leaves were already used to make a cart loaded with watermelons and a grand piano, so it’s possible the anchor was made by only one leaf.
Mao Mao: "She even breaks the laws of nature!"
  • Black Comedy: Adorabat assumes Mao Mao "separating the forest from the trees" meant that he would destroy Tanya's doubles to find the real one. He didn’t.
    • He even told her to cover her eyes, which could imply that what he was going to do would have involved a lot of gorn if they weren’t all duplicates.
  • Bounty Hunter: Tanya captures Badgerclops for the bounty. A close-up of her list reveals that she has crossed out all the remaining Thicket Thieves, Badgerclops' old gang.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Mao Mao keeps scolding Tanya for breaking laws, then reveals that Badgerclops gave the aerocycle an illegal upgrade.
  • Insistent Terminology:
Mao Mao: "I thought you said you didn’t have a gold motorcycle!! "
Tanya Keys: "It’s a truck, get over it!"
  • Literal Metaphor: Tanya argues that while she does break some laws, "it's not like [she] drive[s] a solid gold motorcycle." She drives a solid gold truck.
  • Meaningful Echo: Combined with Ironic Echo, Tanya informs Mao Mao about a restaurant serving Hydra eggs, which are " not 100% legal". Later, he tells Adorabat Badgerclops installed boosters on the aerocycle. When questioned why they don’t use them all the time he tells her that they "aren't exactly... legal".
  • Mood Whiplash: Mao Mao is in the middle of apologizing for leaving and "putting some silly rules above [his and Tanya's] friendship", when Adorabat abruptly zooms by on the aerocycle, crashing into the ocean. Everyone laughs at this afterwards.
    Adorabat: "I don’t have a driver's license?"
  • Ninja Log: In a variation, Tanya is able to turn ordinary leaves into decoy props that turn back into leaves when Mao Mao grabs them.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: Badgerclops lampshades how she can just escape, but Tanya compares it to "play[ing] tag with yourself".
    • Combined with Troll, she also likes to tease Mao Mao, especially how intense he is when it comes to "JUUSTICCEE!!". Badgerclops agreed.
  • No Warrant? No Problem!: Averted, Mao Mao shows a Sweetie Pie a warrant for searching his house when trying to find Tanya and Badgerclops. (She was the couch he was sitting on)
  • Say My Name: "TAANYAAAAA!"
  • Screw Yourself: Implied. Pinky says he's in love while looking in the direction of Tanya, who’s at the time shapeshifted to look like him. With grotesque long legs.
  • Secret Test of Character: Tanya Keys's attempt to capture Badgerclops turns out to be mostly a ploy to see whether Mao Mao is willing to stop being Lawful Stupid to rescue a friend. He is.
  • Super Mode: Parodied when Pinky covers himself in mayonnaise to achieve his "ultimate form".
  • Sweat Drop: Hapeens twice:
    • Briefly before Mao Mao tries to explain his relationship to Tanya and "adult relationships" in general.
    • Also happens when he says the aerocycle's upgrades are illegal. See Hypocritical Humor above.
  • Tanuki: Tanya, who is The Trickster and a Master of Disguise.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Tanya thinks Mao Mao is foolish for following laws because according to her they are just made up.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Tanya used to be Mao Mao's partner. Something happened though, and they parted ways.
