Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E04 "What Would Lucifer Do?"

Go To

"Oh, I don't know... Get laid! Play the piano! Punish evil! Just, whenever you're faced with a choice, ask yourself the question "WWLD": What Would Lucifer Do?"

Amenadiel tries to figure out what he should do on Earth while Lucifer and Chloe investigate a camp for at-risk youth.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Artistic License – Medicine: After the Lt is shot and he's in the hospital, he's shown having a blood pressure cuff on his right arm. But in principle, blood pressure is measured at the left arm (which is closer to the heart, and therefore slightly more accurate) except when the left arm is injured. But the Lt wasn't shot in the left arm (he was in the abdomen), and we have nothing to otherwise indicate his left arm is injured. Furthermore, the cuff is positioned just above his elbow, while the proper positioning would be higher, halfway up the upper arm.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Lucifer apparently likes to eat crisps [UK]/chips [US] dipped in chocolate paste (something looking like Nutella). The other characters look on in disbelief and slight distaste.
Lucifer: Reach for the unexpected, and allow yourself to be surprised! Like crisps and chocolate.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: An example between siblings. Lucifer says the most spiteful, insulting things he can come up with to Amenadiel in order to convince him that he can't and won't change. Amenadiel though sees through it.
  • Brick Joke: Pierce tells Chloe that the representative for the police union position is for has-been, useless cops with no hope of advancement, so he wouldn't waste his best detective on that. Later, the two of them have to keep a straight face when Dan shows up to thank Pierce for the opportunity, and tries to make Chloe feel better about not getting the position.
  • The Comically Serious: Pierce says that if the kid really is innocent, the Lucifer's actions only served to scare him straight.
  • Epic Fail: Amenadiel tries to be more like Lucifer, so he starts acting like a womanizer. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Flash Step: Having wings again certainly proves helpful for Lucifer.
  • Food Slap: Amenadiel tries to imitate Lucifer's confidence to seduce a woman. Unfortunately for him, that technique only works for someone with Lucifer's charisma to back it up - instead, he gets a drink thrown in his face.
  • Foreshadowing: Some of the things Pierce says take a whole new meaning after The Reveal in The Sin Bin:
The possibility of death has never felt... so real before.
I can see why Lucifer's so affected by you. It's because you're special, Decker.
  • High-Altitude Interrogation: Lucifer opens the passenger's door on the car and suspends a suspect over a steep cliff; understandably, the kid starts talking.
  • Implausible Deniability: When Chloe arrives to find Lucifer directing a drug operation while on horseback:
Chloe: What is going on here? And how did you get that horse?
    Lucifer: What horse?
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Lucifer first drives like a maniac on a cliff side road and then hangs the suspect over the edge and threatening to let go.
  • No Social Skills: Amenadiel hasn't quite picked up how to make small talk and since he doesn't have Lucifer's charm, his attempts at hitting on girls end in failure.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Upon being called a good influence to others, Lucifer sets out to prove them wrong by teaching the kids at the rehab institution how to process and distribute drugs.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Amenadiel dons a three-piece suit while trying to emulate Lucifer.
  • Taking the Bullet: Pierce does this for Chloe.
