Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E03 "Mr. and Mrs. Mazikeen Smith"

Go To

Maze takes off on her own to hunt a dangerous fugitive and bring him back to LA for the reward.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
    • Maze says her next bounty is about to practically deliver himself to her in the Lux:
Linda: You got your bounty to come here? How did you pull that off?
Lucifer: Let me guess. Blackmail. No, promise of a threesome!
Maze: [smugly] Drink coupon to Lux.
    • Lucifer dismisses Linda's concern over Rivers possibly manipulating Maze, remarking that the two of them have been through "the plagues, the floods, the Dave Matthews Band..."
  • Birds of a Feather: Maze and Rivers are a lot alike, which he notes more than once, and they get on alarmingly well. However, in the end, she realises that she has roots, where he doesn't.
  • Blade Enthusiast: Maze hides knives in her boots. She also very good at throwing them.
  • Blood Knight: Maze, in spades. She's practically giddy when Rivers says that he might try to fight her instead of run away.
    Maze: Please... fight.
  • Brick Joke: Dan's pudding is stolen again, by Maze this time.
  • Canada Eh: The Canadians' niceness frustrates Maze to no end.
  • Chained Heat: Maze and Rivers have to fight the hitman while handcuffed to each other.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: In Chloe's words, Maze is trying to prove she can terrorize an entire country. From what we see, she might not be exaggerating.
  • The Conspiracy: Rivers warns Maze that Herrera was part of one.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode is focused on Maze, who goes out to Canada to handle a case of her own.
  • Dirty Cop: Lt Herrera framed Rivers for the murders of two teenagers.
  • Exposed to the Elements: Subverted. Despite Chloe's attempt to warn her about the weather in Canada, Maze doesn't adjust her wardrobe and gets quite the shock when she walks out into the snow. She ends up stealing a parka off a man who laughed at her when a chunk of snow fell on her head.
  • Happy-Ending Massage: Implied. Maze seeks to get information out of Rivers' girlfriend, Muffy, by taking the place of her masseur. Maze being Maze already makes the normal massage draw some loud and suggestive moans from Muffy, but Muffy is even more surprised when Maze extends the massage to her breasts. When Maze asks her if she wants her to stop, Muffy replies "I didn't say that..." and the scene cuts away. Later, when Maze meets Rivers, she casually describes Muffy as "great in the sack".
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Maze aims a knife guided only by the sound of gunshots from the weapon being fired; she manages to hit the "room service" lady in the shoulder.
  • Never Bring a Gun to a Knife Fight: Lampshaded right before Maze hits someone armed with a submachine gun with one of her throwing knives, whom she can't even see!
  • Not That Kind of Doctor: Linda is an MD, but she's not a surgeon, as she keeps reminding people when they want her to patch someone up.
  • Odd Friendship: Maze and Rivers, her bounty. It helps that they're surprisingly alike, and he provides her with earnest and well-meant advice, even after realising that she's not coming with him in the end.
  • Shout-Out: The episode titled after Mr And Mrs Smith, which is itself a remake of the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name. Rivers Title Drops it.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The guy who thought that a fancy club like Lux would have coupons.
  • We Have to Get the Bullet Out!: Linda tells Maze she needs to fish the bullet out of Rivers' gunshot wound in order to stitch it up. Of course, Linda is Not That Kind of Doctor and Maze is performing Worst Aid...
  • Wham Shot: The last scene of the episode is of someone putting pictures of Maze and Rivers in a file labelled with Maze's real name: Mazikeen of the Lilim.
