Recap / Kill La Kill Ep 18 Into The Night

Go To

With Satsuki revealing she was against her mother the whole time, she puts her counter-attack plan into place to stop Ragyo once and for all with Ryuko, the Elite Four and Nudist Beach helping. But things don't exactly go according to plan.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • And Show It to You: Ragyo does this to Ryuko, revealing her heart is made up of Life Fibers.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Soundly averted, Satsuki is soon covered in her own blood after the beatdown Ragyo delivers.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Ragyo uses her mental stitching to brainwash the 1-Star Students into becoming her puppets to attack Satsuki. It even happens to Ryuko for a short while.
  • Comically Small Bribe: To get the wounded civilians to leave the stadium, Mako has to entice them with food from Osaka.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: Iori and his uncle succeed in neutralizing the Primordial Life Fiber. But it manages to break out of it's frozen state and attack Iori and his agents.
  • Enemy Mine: Double subverted. While Nudist Beach is appalled that Satsuki didn't try to contact them for a potential alliance, Satsuki declares that she has no need for half-baked allies and preferred to work with her own allies. Later, she permits Ryuko, Aikuro and Tsumugu to fend off Raygo's forces while she deals with her mother herself.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Satsuki has many reasons to rebel against her mother. On top of that list is that she lost a sister to one of Ragyo's failed Life Fiber experiments, who was discarded like garbage. Ragyo soon discovers that the sister mentioned isn't too far from them.
  • Foreshadowing: Mako reunites with her parents after being shanghaied into working on the Field Trip Invasion. The episode ends with another "reunion" between a daughter and her parent.
  • Heroic Willpower: Even though she's targeted by Ragyo's mental stitching, Ryuko is able to snap out of it with a punch to the face and removes the stitching from her brain in only a few minutes.
  • It Only Works Once: Nui tries to goad Ryuko into losing control by bringing up how she killed her father just like in their first confrontation. Too bad for her that Ryuko is able to demonstrate better control of herself and overwhelms Nui in combat.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Ragyo reveals that she is Ryuuko's mother, making her and Satsuki sisters.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Rei manages to escape her bindings and tricks Satsuki into destroying the device that held her captive.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Once Ragyo gains the advantage over Satsuki, she pummels her mercilessly.
  • No-Sell: Satsuki sends Iori to try to take out the Primordial Life Fiber but it resists his attacks and forces his troops to retreat.
  • Not Quite Dead: Ragyo surprisingly survives the sneak attack Satsuki placed on her in the previous episode. And even a decapitation attack due to one strand of Life Fiber still being attached to her.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Nui briefly drops her bubbly persona when she sees Ryuko's hybrid heart.
  • This Cannot Be!: Satsuki reacts to Ryuko's beating but glowing red heart with "impossible" as she realizes the implications.
  • Willfully Weak: Discussed. Ragyo points out that Satsuki was holding herself back from embracing Junketsu's full power because of her fear of allowing the hybrid suit to take over her.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Ragyo snaps Satsuki's sword Bakugan in half.
  • Wham Episode: After witnessing Ryuko's resistance to her powers, Ragyo tears out Ryuko's heart and reveals to her that she of Life Fiber hybrid. It finally confirms her suspicions: Ryuko is the daughter Ragyo nonchalantly threw away after her experiment on her seemingly failed.
  • Would Hit a Girl: The boys of the Elite Four are more than willing to battle against Nui even though she's dismayed that they're picking on a delicate lady like her. Then Nonon appears and reminds her why they're called the Elite Four.
  • You Can't Thwart Stage One: It's Satsuki's turn to experience this as her plan against her mother breaks apart instantly when it's revealed that Ragyo has Life Fibers implanted in her body making it near impossible to kill her. What's more Ragyo has her own backup plan as well.
