Recap / Inside Job S2 E3 "Reagan & Mychelle's Hive School Reunion"

Go To

A plot for the group to pose as Myc's "cluster" at his high school reunion takes a turn for the worst when Reagan accidentally assimilates Myc into the mushroom hive mind. Meanwhile, Rand’s quest to find out who’s been pooping on his desk leads to a surprising discovery.

Tropes:

  • Anachronism Stew: One not explicitly brought up, but pretty extreme. Myc graduated from hive school 5,000 years ago. However, he was a nerd back then, spouting random trivia about Dragon Ball Z, complete with a Goku action figure, and a T-shirt with a Super Mario Bros. mushroom on it.
  • Assimilation Backfire: Once the crew roast Myc into regaining his independent thought from the hive mind he transmits his toxicity to the rest of the hive, causing it to break up in petty fights.
  • Contract on the Hitman: Invoked and Played for Laughs. Turns out Rand has a sniper team trained on the sniper team he assigned to protect him. Then he wonders who would snipe those snipers.
  • Enemy Mine: Thanks to Rand and J.R's mutual animosity towards the Robes, the former invites the latter back to Cognito Inc, rather than turn him back in, in exchange for debugging additional cameras hidden in the company.
  • Funny Background Event: Gigi, Brett, Glenn and Andre can being seen nervously looking on as Reagan exposes Myc's lies to his classmates.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: At the end of the episode, Myc brings Gigi and Reagan on his podcast to ask if the two of them have ever made out. The two leave in disgust.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: The episode sets itself up as a typical sitcom-style "lie to help a friend" plot with the gang pretending to be Myc's "cluster" at his high school reunion. However, Myc's obnoxious attitude ends that plan before the halfway point when Reagan angrily reveals the truth and accidentally shoves him into the hive mind. The rest of the A-plot then becomes dealing with the hive mind’s plot to take over the earth with Myc's knowledge of humans to aid them.
  • Higher Understanding Through Drugs: Andre slips psychedelic mushrooms into Glenn's drink, sending them both on a Mushroom Samba that ends with David Attenborough narrating the origin of the mushroom people and their plans to take revenge on humanity for eating them and evolving sapience.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: Reagan, Gigi and Brett get trapped in one of these after the Hive assimilates Myc, and Reagan is only able to break free after a hallucination of Carrie from Sex and the City tells her to fight it.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Myc forces Reagan and the gang to degrade themselves and makes mocking insults. Reagan finally snaps when he mocks her alcoholism and losing her chance at becoming CEO and gives a speech to the crowd about how Myc works for her and that they hate him, even showing a photo of them doodling on him while he's asleep.
  • Properly Paranoid: It turns out Rand was right about spies infiltrating Cognito Inc. J.R. had escaped Shadow Prison and has been crapping on his desk, both out of spite and to get his attention, and they discover that all of the roaches in the building are Literal Surveillance Bugs.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Being across the country, Reagan tells Rand that if he wanted her help, he either has to wait or use a teleporter. Turns out Rand does have a teleporter, but he can't figure how to use it.
  • Shout-Out: Myc is revealed to have been an unabashed Dragon Ball Z fan when he was younger, with video footage showing him holding a Goku action figure and talking about the Freeza Saga before a bully shoves him in a locker.
  • Take That!: Two of Gigi's comparisons.
  • Transplanted Aliens: Turns out all psychedelic mushrooms originated from Myc's alien cluster, its effect on early hominids resulting in them evolving into early humans.
  • Undercover as Lovers: Myc makes the gang pretend to be his cluster harem at his hive school reunion.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: As insufferable as Myc is, they would rather have that then a Faux Affably Evil version of him in on his species' plot to usurp humanity.
