Recap / Hudson And Rex S 5 E 16 Due North

Go To

Rex seeks help from Detective Sidney Scott in order to save his stranded and injured friends.

Continues from "Northern Rexposure".

Tropes:

  • Amoral Attorney : The one who came up with the fraud scheme was none other than Daniel himself, with his role being falsifying the cleanup reports so as to provide a cover for the operation.
  • Be as Unhelpful as Possible: Crystal refuses to divulge the knowledge she possesses about the conspiracy behind Basal Mining out of fear of being sent to jail for the robbery she and Nick committed, choosing to instead flee even when she still has a target on her back. She eventually reveals what she knows to Jesse after he stops her from trying to run off again with the stolen money, only for Jesse to make her also tell the police after the two of them and Rex get attacked again by the gunman from the other day, much to Crystal's dismay.
  • Bittersweet Ending:
    • For Sidney, anyway. She finally manages to catch Daniel's killer, but now lives with the knowledge of her late husband's crimes and because of it questions if the love between them was real. After deciding that it wasn’t, she decides to move on by selling her house (which Daniel built and furnished using his cuts of the stolen money) and adopts a "Rex" of her own to help with cases.
    • Crystal as well. Nick's killer is caught and she's cleared of Bianca's murder, but is likely to be facing parole for the robbery of the Cooper residence. She and Jesse end things on better terms though, with Crystal promising to have her act cleaned up by the time she comes to visit her brother in St. John's.
    • And Charlie. He, Rex, and Sarah reunite back in St. John's after the case is solved, but decides to give up on his unsolved kidnapping case for the last time after thinking on Boyle's words.
  • Broken Pedestal: Sidney is jarred to learn that her own husband of sixteen years had been operating a fraud scheme behind her back that resulted in countless people getting sick and killed. While she dislikes the truth, she works to make sure the public knows about his crimes and that his victims receive proper compensation.
  • Didn't Think This Through: One of Crystal's biggest flaws alongside her immaturity is her tendency to not think her ideas all the way through or what the consequences of them might be other than jail. She did research into Cooper and Kinney's fraud scheme and found out where Cooper lived and where exactly he hid his shares of the stolen money, but her robbery was half-baked in that Crystal never considered there being other people like Bianca Cooper in the house at the time, having eyewitnesses to their crimes, or the possibility that Tim would eventually find out and retaliate by sending Kinney after her and Nick. Then there's Crystal's insistence on running away when it would be safer to turn herself in to the police and telling them what she knows, even when the gunman who killed Nick is still out there hunting her down.
  • Disappointed in You: After she finally reveals to Sidney what she knows about Cooper and Kinney's fraud scheme and how she learned of it, Jesse claims that Rex is very disappointed in Crystal for having tried to steal from them instead of reporting it to the police.
  • Evil All Along: Daniel wasn't just involved in Cooper and Kinney’s fraud scheme, he was also apparently the one who came up with the whole thing according to Cooper. That was until Daniel became worried enough about people starting to catch on to what they were doing that he tried to shut it all down by threatening to go public if the water wasn't cleaned up. Too greedy to stop and not wanting to do the latter as it would cost millions (millions that they had already stolen by that point as Sidney points out), Cooper chose to put a bullet in Daniel's chest and continued the operation without him.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • Upon looking at the autopsy report, Sarah analyzes Bianca's gunshot wound to have actually happened roughly two hours after she was knocked out. Cue an Oh, Crap! from Detective Huang, who realizes that it means she was completely wrong about the time and cause of death as she was certain it was from a head injury and had only been going by eyewitness accounts and alibis for estimation.
    • Lampshaded by Tim in regards to how for years Sidney failed to realize that Daniel was crooked, pointing out how their luxury-filled house and Daniel’s tendency to throw money around should’ve been red flags for her.
  • Frame-Up: Crystal is insistent that Nick didn't kill Bianca despite the evidence, wanting to prove his innocence. However, she does so by trying and failing to convince Jesse to help her get rid of the stolen money despite Jesse pointing out that it would be easier to just tell the police the truth. Turns out he actually is innocent. Kinney planted the evidence in Crystal and Nick's hideout to frame them, but failed due to leaving behind electronics they didn't steal and a lit cigarette when neither of them smoked.
  • Hero of Another Story: What Sidney ultimately becomes for both this and the previous episode, joining forces with Rex to save Sarah, Jesse and Crystal and uncover the truth behind Daniel and Bianca's murders. Meanwhile, Jesse and Crystal take on a shared Deuteragonist role while Sarah is in the hospital recovering from her injuries.
  • I Choose to Stay: After the case is solved, Jesse invites Crystal to come live in St. John's with him once her parole is up. Crystal turns him down and stay in Ontario out of the desire to grow up and become a better person, with Jesse respecting her decision.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When the couple who had plans of making Rex their new guard dog tracks him down to the police station when he escapes from their truck, they pester Sidney for a reward after she realizes and informs them that Rex belongs to someone else. It's only after Inspector Ali gets involved asking if there's a problem that the couple backs down and leaves empty-handed.
  • Send in the Search Team: After Rex tracks down Sidney for help, the two head into the woods via helicopter to find and rescue Sarah, Jesse, and Crystal. While the former two are relieved, Crystal is more reluctant due to the fact that she's currently a wanted fugitive.
  • She Knows Too Much: Crystal found out about Tim and Kinney's fraud scheme by overhearing their conversations at her workplace. Instead of reporting them to the authorities, she and Nick decided to rob them out of financial desperation, only for things to go sideways and get the duo targets on her backs once Cooper and Kinney found out what happened.
  • Skewed Priorities: While Crystal wants to both prove Nick's innocence and survive the gunman targeting here, both goals are hampered by her overwhelming desire to not end up in jail for the robbery she and Nick committed. Needless to say, this has also interfered greatly with the police's investigation as Crystal is the only one who knows what's really going on.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: As Jesse tells her multiple times, the easiest way Crystal can both prove Nick's innocence and survive is to just tell the police what she knows. Crystal however is too stubborn and childish to listen, eventually forcing Jesse to put his foot down before the gunman comes looking for them again.
  • Stealing from the Till: Wayne Kinney and his company had the contract to clean Basal Mining's waste runoff and bury it once it was treated, with Tim Cooper being the head of local operations. That was until Daniel Scott came up with the idea for the three of them to siphon money from Basal's cleaning fund by having Kinney cut corners on his jobs so that there would be money left over to embezzle and keep people's mouths shut, all the while laundering said money and letting the buried untreated waste leak into the water supply of the local indigenous community and cause them to get sick. All of this had been going on for years until Crystal found out about it and had the ingenious idea to steal some of that money for herself and Nick.
  • Stealing from Thieves: Desperate for money, Crystal thought it was a good idea to steal from a pair of money launderers. Except she never stopped to consider the possibility of said launderers retaliating when they found out, leading to her getting a target painted on her back and Nick dying. Jesse has none of it when Crystal tries to run off with the money again despite her situation, making his sister own up to her actions and confess everything she knows to the police before anyone else gets hurt.
  • Stupid Crooks: Sure, Crystal and Nick's robbery was half-baked from them not properly planning things out, but they never would've found out about the fraud scheme had Cooper and Kinney not gotten careless and cocky enough to discuss their actions where people could overhear them like their places of work.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Tim Cooper is the real culprit behind Bianca's murder, having put a bullet in his wife's chest two hours after she was knocked out and blamed it on Crystal and Nick to take the heat off his and Kinney's fraud scheme.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Stealing from a pair of ruthless money launderers was definitely not one of Crystal’s brightest ideas, with Nick paying the price for it. Even stupider is Crystal trying to run away despite there being a skilled gunman still after her instead of just going to the police and telling them what she knows, all because she doesn’t want to go to jail for the robbery she committed.
  • Was It All a Lie?: After solving the case and learning of what her husband was involved in, Sidney is left wondering if what she and Daniel had was legitimate. She ultimately decides that it wasn't, believing that love built on lies isn't real love.
Sidney: Is this what closure feels like?
Ali: Sometimes. But maybe it feels like an open wound.
Sidney: How could I have been married to him for sixteen years and not even know what he was capable of?
Ali: Because you loved him, and you wanted to believe.
Sidney: I don't know. Without honesty, without actually seeing him… I don't know if that's love at all.
  • Womanchild: This side of Crystal shows itself shortly after she, Jesse, and Sarah are rescued, such as her practically throwing a tantrum whenever Jesse or someone else won't let her have her way and using French fries in a convoluted way to explain Cooper and Kinney's fraud scheme instead of just saying money laundering and fraud as Jesse points out. It's part of the reason that Crystal decides to stay in Ontario and accept her punishment, admitting that she has a lot of growing up to do.
