Continues in "Due North".

Tropes:

  • Cliffhanger: A rather big one. Jesse does everything he can to keep Sarah from dying while Rex manages to make it to civilization to find help, only to be intercepted by a couple who mistake him for a stray and have plans of making him their new guard dog.
  • Crusading Widower: Sidney Scott, an Ontario police detective whose husband Daniel was murdered by an unknown assailant sometime before the events of the episode. She had been taking time off before deciding to get involved in the investigation of Bianca Cooper's murder, believing it to somehow be connected to Daniel's and other people involved with Basal Mining despite her coworkers Inspector Yousef Ali and Detective Kai Huang saying otherwise.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: What Bianca Cooper's husband Tim delves into after learning that she was murdered during a robbery, hoping that Sidney will be able to catch whoever is responsible for it.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Unlike the cleaner and more strait-laced Jesse, his sister Crystal is known for getting herself into trouble. Her latest antics involve robbing a house with her boyfriend Nick out of desperation for money, only for things to go sideways when things lead to Nick accidentally knocking out and apparently killing the owner's wife Bianca Cooper. Because of this, Crystal decides to call Jesse and gets him to come to Ontario for help, accompanied by Sarah and Rex.
  • Foreshadowing: When Nick breaks into the Cooper house at the beginning of the episode, he immediately goes for one of the cabinets instead of taking random valuables and pulls out several stacks of cash as if he knew exactly where to find it, hinting that he and Crystal know more about their target than what they're letting on.
  • From Bad to Worse: Things escalate greatly after Jesse, Sarah, and Rex meet up with Crystal and Nick at their secret hiding place. Nick is shot and killed by an unknown gunman who seeks to do the same to Crystal, the plane the group flees in goes down in the woods, and Sarah is at risk of dying from internal bleeding sustained from the crash. Rex is then sent off into the woods with a note written by Sarah to try and find help, despite Jesse pointing out all the potential dangers he could run into.
  • Meatgrinder Surgery: What Sarah makes Jesse subject her to in order to treat her internal trauma despite the latter's extreme reluctance, which is even more painful due to not having anesthetic or proper tools to do it.
  • Revisiting the Cold Case: Charlie stays behind in St. John’s due to the day the episode takes place on being the fourteenth anniversary of an unsolved abduction case involving a four-year-old girl named Allison Anders. The major suspects were her neighbors Trevor Miles and Bertrand Boyle due to one of Alison's shoes being found on their property. Trevor was never seen again the night of the incident, while Boyle spent the last decade in prison for his suspected involvement despite his insistence that he doesn't know anything. Charlie tries one last time to convince Boyle to finally tell him what he knows since the latter is now released due to him currently dying from an incurable illness, only for Boyle to retort that Charlie should just give up already and claims that the detective is just doing nothing but chasing ghosts by this point.
  • Stupid Crooks: Crystal and Nick commit a burglary in broad daylight without bothering to wear gloves, masks, or anything to hide their identities all because they thought the house would be empty and that there wouldn’t be eyewitnesses, causing Nick to leave his DNA at the crime scene and both of them to become wanted fugitives almost immediately afterward.
