Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 4 E 8 Il Buffone

Go To

Harley and Ivy return from the future and find out what everyone's been up to.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Bane's entire adventure in Italy to learn how to make amazing pasta in order to win Nora's heart amounts to nothing because she had pasta for lunch and doesn't want any.
  • Apocalypse Anarchy: Predictably, the sun being blotted out leads to looting. Nora even insists on getting in on the action before the good stuff is taken.
  • Arbitrary Weapon Range: Lex's ozone laser comically peters off and falls — in space! — 304 centimeters short of the ozone, necessitating Lex's plot to expand the atmosphere slightly.
  • Bad Samaritan: Mama Nacaroni is willing to teach Bane how to make the best pasta in the world, but in exchange she wants him to take up her legacy, which she only tells him after his training is complete.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Bane learns that his pasta making master is named Mama Nacaroni, the name Gordon apparently mispronounced. Mama Macaroni of restaurant fame is actually her cousin, whose surname was changed at Ellis Island when the family immigrated to America.
    • Mama Nacaroni lets Bane go in exchange for front row seats to Clayface's Vegas show. He only grants this request in exchange for a promise to humiliate Ivy on television by headbutting her.
  • Disaster Dominoes: Starting with Lex's repair-the-ozone-layer-to-screw-Superman operation hitting a literal 10-foot technical snag, then clashing against Nora making it a war of Me-and-Ivy-control-the-LOD-not-Lex-anymore, makes everything avalanche into the start of the apocalypse.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Bane angrily blows up a pasta-maker factory for not having the replacement handle he wanted.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Bane gets his Vespa back from the kids who stole it and leaves them suspended upside-down from the tree. They're both unhurt and good-natured about it, though.
  • El Spanisho: Bane introduces himself to some Italian children giving his name an italian flair as "Bagno", unaware he just called himself "toilet" in Italian.
  • Evil Is Petty: Lex repaired the ozone layer and blocked out the sun solely to deprive Superman of his powers.
  • Fingore: For attempting to walk out on her, Mama Nacaroni tries to put Bane's fingers in a meat grinder.
  • How We Got Here: The episode goes back and reveals what led up to the apocalypse that Harley and Ivy find themselves in after returning from the future.
  • It's All About Me:
    • A clash of egos definitely sums up what goes on between Lex vs. Nora.
    • Tawny doesn't seem to care about what Lex is doing to the sky, only that he won't give a statement to her.
  • Lockdown: Lex triggers a lockdown on Legion of Doom headquarters, then pumps in poison gas.
  • Mythology Gag: Ivy describes the world that she and Harley return back to as being like the Snyderverse.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Nora refuses to loan out Volcana to Lex out of principle, but ultimately causes the very natural disaster he needed in her plan to escape.
    • King Shark accidentally blows up the time sphere with a molotov thanks to his enlarged hands having horrible aim.
  • The Night That Never Ends: Lex uses his ozone machine to blot out the sun, depriving Superman of his powers.
  • Old Master: The greatest pasta maker in Italy is an old woman who is capable of subduing and almost killing Bane, the villain responsible for infamously breaking Batman's back.
  • Take That!: Ivy blames the sepiatone atmosphere on someone letting the Snyderverse take over.
  • Title Drop: Il Buffone is what Mama Nacaroni calls Bane, who is oblivious that she's calling him a buffoon.
