Time Out

Manny and the tools are called by Mayor Rosa- the town clock is running an hour slow, and urgently needs to be brought back up to the correct time.

“Time Out” contains instances of:

  • Chekhov's Gun: The birdhouse Manny was making at the beginning of the episode ends up being used to rehome a family of birds who made their nest in the workings of the town clock.
  • Clockworks Area: Manny and the tools spend a good amount of time in the innards of the big clock at City Hall, trying to find what’s wrong with it.
  • Doomed Supermarket Display: A display Mr. Lopart was building outside his store ends up being this after Fluffy jumps on Mr. Lopart and causes him to stumble and fall into it.
  • Knew It All Along:
Felipe: A jaula is a birdhouse, Pat.
Pat: Right! I knew that… sorta.
  • Literal-Minded:
Pat: The reloj grande is running slow? Well, at least it should be easy to catch.
  • Meaningful Name: The tools end up naming two of the birds that made their nest in the town clock “Beaker” and “Peep”.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: The male bird is blue, while the two female birds are a shade of beige-approaching-pink.
  • Pokémon Speak: The tools invoke this by naming one of the birds that ended up inhabiting Manny’s birdhouse “Peep”.
  • Pun-Based Title: On the concept of a “timeout” and “running out of time”.
  • Punny Name: One of the birds that made its nest in the town clock ends up being named “Nestor” by the tools.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Two of the birds seen in the birdhouse at the end have eyelashes to mark them as female. Oh, and they also have (ornithologically-correct) drab plumage, to contrast with male bird (which is bright blue).

Shine Bright

Mrs. Hillary calls Manny to repair some spotlights in the elementary school gym, in preparation for the school band’s concert later that night. Then one of the spotlights falls from the ceiling, and breaks the concert’s only snare drum- and then things go from bad to worse as Manny finds that Kelly’s store is closed

“Shine Bright” provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Blinded by the Light: Manny, the tools, and Mrs. Hillary are briefly blinded when Felipe turns on a spotlight that’s pointed straight at them.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Spiffy Soap, seen being advertised on The Wing And Nut Show at the beginning of the episode, ends up being used by Manny in order to grease a stuck spotlight when a closure of Kelly’s hardware store prevents him from acquiring actual grease.
  • Expository Theme Tune: The Wing And Nut Show now has one.
    I’m Wing
    I’m Nut
    We’re hardware in a rut
We’ve gotta fix our house in a hurry!
    (So scurry!)
And sit down in your seat
    It’s gonna be real neat
    We’ll show you that we’re
    Really really
    Very very very
    HANDYYYYYYYY!
  • Everything Is an Instrument: The tools end up resorting to this in order to replace Kyle’s broken drum (and give themselves a chance to perform in the school concert). Specifically, Kyle hits his drumsticks together before drumming on a trash can lid (which is being held by Rusty), Dusty scrapes against a chalkboard, Felipe and Turner ding an old fire alarm bell, Squeeze shakes a jar of beads like a maraca, Pat drums on a bucket, and Stretch strums rubber bands that had been placed over a frame made to resemble a guitar.
  • Gross Gum Gag: Pat ends up getting stuck on a wad of gum someone had left on the floor of the supply closet.
  • Incredibly Long Note: The theme song of The Wing And Nut Show ends on a very long, stretched-out, “HANDYYYYYY!”.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Felipe does this with a spotlight.
    Felipe: I think it’s working!
//The spotlight immediately falls out of the ceiling, crashing down on Kyle’s drum//
  • Last Place You Look: The keys Mr. Lopart lost turn out to have been in his front door the whole time.
  • Literal-Minded: Pat interprets Manny saying they should “put our heads together” as meaning he should lean his head against Turner’s.
  • MacGyvering: With Kelly’s hardware store closed, Manny and the tools have to resort to this in order to fix some spotlights- a light that won’t turn is greased with soap, one that won’t stay pointed at what it’s supposed to is tied in place with a jump rope, and a light that fell out of the ceiling entirely is hung from a basketball hoop. They also take a similar approach when replacing Kyle’s broken drum.
  • Parody Product Placement: The Wing And Nut Show is sponsored by Spiffy Soap, something Wing and Nut are only too happy to remind their viewers of.
    Rusty: Aww. Commercial.
  • Self Botched Catchphrase: After the tools make a mess of his workshop imitating Wing and Nut (It Makes Sense in Context), Manny accidentally answers the phone with “We break it, you fix it”, before correcting himself.
  • Show Within a Show: The Wing And Nut Show makes a return at the beginning of the episode, with the tools watching it… and making a mess trying to imitate its theme song while the show itself is on a commercial break.
  • Sticky Situation: Pat briefly becomes stuck on a wad of chewing gum while checking out the school’s supply closet.
