Koschie's Atomic Superpower in action.

To kill Koschei the Deathless, first you must find his soul, which is hidden in an egg, in a duck in a lead chest buried beneath an oak tree.

Nick and Hank's current case involves a man who can heal or kill, while Juliette takes in an old friend dealing with some domestic problems.

Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • Asshole Victim: Alex Renko may be avenging his murdered father, but he kills an innocent waiter for his uniform. He dies of radiation poisoning.
  • The Atoner: Myshkin uses his abilities to heal as atonement for his life as an assassin.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The opening scene has a young woman being tailed in a forest by a hooded man. This turns out to be Nick, out on his morning run.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Rasputin was a Koschie, like Myshkin.
Monroe: It figures. I knew he was Wesen.
  • Big "NO!": Olga when Myshkin uses the last of his power to heal Larissa.
  • Call-Back: The episode opens with a woman in a red sweater heading out on a jog through the woods. She becomes aware of a dark figure in a hoody running behind, becoming increasingly nervous as he gains on her... until Nick nods a greeting as he overtakes her and continues his run.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Myshkin's housekeeper Larissa, who turns out to be Alex Renko's partner... and sister.
  • Cliffhanger: Alicia's abusive husband is shown watching Nick and Juliette's house, and is revealed as a Klaustriech.
  • Contamination Situation: After finding Alex Renko's not-so-dead body, Nick, Hank and Wu are told they've been exposed to radiation and must take a decontamination shower. Their clothes are incinerated.
  • Cunning Linguist: Renard speaks Russian, as he reveals when Myshkin and his wife have a conversation in Russian to exclude the cops. A case of The Cast Showoff as Sasha Roiz speaks Russian.
Hank: Now, why doesn't that surprise me?
  • Destination Defenestration: When Alex Renko attacks Myshkin in the storage room, the latter ends their fight by throwing him out the window.
  • Domestic Abuse: Juliette's college friend Alicia stays with her and Nick when she runs away from her abusive husband.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Myshkin's wife Olga slashes Larissa's throat after she poisons Myshkin, who uses his gift to save her at the cost of his life.
  • I Have to Go Iron My Dog: Nick, when he realises Juliette's friend Alicia is a Fuchsbau and dazedly excuses himself.
Nick: Nah, I just, uh, gotta put the room in the bag.
  • It's a Long Story: When Myshkin asks Hank and Renard if they're Grimms, Renard says this verbatim about his heritage.
  • Kill and Replace: Alex Renko murders a waiter at a restaurant to impersonate him.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Myshkin has long accepted that his work as a healer will kill him, or someone who wants revenge on him will try to kill him.
  • Rasputinian Death: Appropriately, as Rasputin was a Koschie.
    • Alex Renko. After receiving a serious case of radiation poisoning, he gets thrown out a window and lingers for days as his condition deteriorates.
    • Myshkin is poisoned and stabbed, but in true Rasputin fashion he's still alive until he gives his life to save his killer.
  • Shout-Out: After having to take a decontamination shower and their clothes being incinerated, Nick, Hank and Wu walk into the precinct in overalls. The Ghostbusters music is heard and someone shouts "Who ya gonna call?"
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: The assassins after Myshkin poison a bottle of vodka in an attempt to kill him. Given his Healing Factor, it fails.
  • The Tooth Hurts: When Renko attempts to use his teeth to alleviate one of the sores on his hands, he winds up pulling it out of his mouth.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Used as a Wham Line. While Myshkin is engaging in foreplay with his housekeeper and a bottle of vodka, she suddenly stands up and says the trope name, revealing she has been trying to kill him.
  • You Killed My Father: The Renko siblings target Myshkin for this very reason.

Boris Myshkin

Despite his menacing appearance and powers, Boris Myshkin the Koschie is a penitent soul who uses his abilities to heal and refuses all offers of payment.

How well does it match the trope?
