No one's impressed by your Game Face, Joe.

I am glad 'tis night, you do not look on me, for I am much ashamed of my exchange.

A young witness goes missing after a gang-related murder, but the case leads back to Hank in an unexpected way. With others looking for the witness, can Nick find him before anyone else gets hurt?

Juliette helps out a friend fleeing her abusive husband, and is thrown to learn that she's a Wesen. But the friend has her own issues with her identity, and her husband isn't far away...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Big Sister Instinct: Zuri rips the throat out of a gang banger who was trying to kill her brother.
  • Bludgeoned to Death: The opening kill, Alonzo Banks, is beaten to death with a pipe.
  • Call-Back: Nick uses his super-hearing in the gunfight at the climax.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Juliette is uncertain how to explicitly tell Alicia that she knows about wesen, asking Rosalee for advice on how to bring it up. When she finally tries to tell Alicia that she knows, Juliette is very awkward when describing herself as a "Kehrseite-Schlich-Kennen", and ends up revealing that Nick is a Grimm (fortunately Joe attacks at this point and gives them all something else to focus on to overcome initial awkwardness).
  • Combat Pragmatist:
    • Joe uses the element of surprise to deck Nick as the door opens and then grab Alicia.
    • Juliette comes after Joe by leaping on his back, followed by Frying Pan of Doom and Groin Attack. Alicia soon joins in by hitting him over the head with various objects. By the time Nick wades in, he's pretty much rescuing the jerk from the women.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Rosalee knows quite a lot about Wesen gangs, because she used to buy drugs from them.
  • Foreshadowing: Zuri doesn't want to date Hank, despite their obvious attraction and his acceptance of her Wesen nature. This suggests she harbours some old-fashioned values, which surely won't become important later.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Tyler is Zuri's real first name; she goes by her middle name, which confuses Hank when the Tyler Z. Ellison he and Nick are looking for turns out to be her.
  • He Knows Too Much: Teenage Jared witnesses a gang murder and is targeted by the murderers.
  • I Have Your Wife: The murderers take Jared's girlfriend hostage to force him to give himself up to them. Instead, he goes there to woge out and get his girlfriend out safely.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Rosalee tells Juliette that Alicia not opening up about her Wesen identity is probably as much about not accepting herself as fear of Juliette's rejection. Apparently this is not uncommon among Wesen, and is partly behind her own Dark and Troubled Past.
Rosalee: You don't realize how different you and Nick and Hank are. That you don't judge or, more importantly, cut off our heads.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Nick intimidates Alonzo's girlfriend into revealing his killers by using his status as a Grimm.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Jared was too scared to testify against the murderers... until they came after him regardless. That persuades him to identify them and leads to their deaths.
  • No-Sell: Alicia's abusive husband Joe tries to intimidate Juliette with his Game Face. It doesn't work.
Juliette: I'm not impressed. [Frying Pan of Doom]
  • Oh, Crap!: Alicia has the usual reaction to finding out Nick is a Grimm; screaming and running away. Nick actually flinches when Juliette says it.
  • Promotion to Parent: Zuri wound up having to raise her brother Jared after their mother died and their father went to prison.
