Recap / Gotham S 4 E 9 Let Them Eat Pie

Go To

Directed by Nathan Hope

Written by Iturri Sosa

In a plot to launch an attack on Sofia's orphanage, Pyg kills several homeless people and cooks their insides, stuffing them into pies.

  • Actor Allusion: Pyg forces the rich to eat meat pies made of humans, and even does a little song about it. As it happens, Michael Cerveris has played Sweeney Todd on Broadway.
  • Asshole Victim: Penguin jabs a knife into a person's head because he doesn't care about any orphans (especially Martin).
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Bullock believes Gordon should have killed Penguin in the first episode, then Carmine Falcone would still be in charge and they wouldn't be in their current situation. But Gordon tells him if he could start over again, he still would spare Penguin.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even the Penguin is revolted by the Pyg's demand that the benefit's wealthy attendees eat pies containing human flesh, and even more repelled when the guy sitting next to him suggests they let Pyg kill a little orphan boy rather than comply.
  • Groin Attack: Pyg nearly skewers Gordon's crotch with a knife.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The knife that Pyg uses to stab Sofia's hand is the same knife that Gordon uses to take him down in battle.
  • I Warned You: Penguin warns Sofia not to betray him again.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Pyg forces the guests to eat the pies.
  • Internal Reveal: Penguin learns of Sofia's romantic involvement with Gordon from Martin.
  • Irony: Penguin eats a person, like how he got his step-mother to eat her kids.
  • Kill the Poor: Pyg's latest plan is to kill and cook Gotham's homeless. It's supposed to be a strike against the wealthy, but in a way that only makes sense to him.
  • Sadistic Choice: Pyg tells the guests that they must eat the pies he's served them of the homeless people he's killed, or he'll kill Martin.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Pyg slaughters innocent people and bakes them into revolting meat pies just like Sweeney Todd (whom Michael Cerveris actually played on Broadway).
    • Pyg's short little musical number, "Meat Pie Tango", is based on the famous showtune from Chicago, "Cell Block Tango".
    • Pyg uses elements from A Modest Proposal as a clue to his latest plan.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Bruce. Not only does he abandon Alfred in the forest (right after the latter shares a touching story about how he met his father!), he throws another Wild Teen Party at the manor and rudely tells Alfred to stop acting like a father, start acting like a butler, and clean the whole place up.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: Bruce admits to Alfred that he's been feeling this. He killed Ra's al Ghul, who's responsible for the series of events which led to his parents' deaths, thus essentially fulfilled his mission. But it didn't make him feel any better nor did it change anything.
  • Villain Song: "Meat Pie Tango", sung by Professor Pyg as he introduces his human pies to the guests.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Pyg threatens to kill Martin if Penguin and the others don't eat their meat pies.
    • One of the guests is on the verge of refusing Pyg's demands, even with Martin's life at stake. Although the guest isn't the one with a knife at the boy's throat, his willingness to let the child die disgusts even the Penguin so much that Cobblepot stabs him in the head.
