Tropes

  • All Men Are Perverts: While pleading to be let out, Chandler gets distracted staring at the lady statuette in Joanna's office.
  • The Bet: Monica's parents bet 5 dollars on whether Monica will "pull a Monica", i.e., flunk the catering for her mother's party. Her mother bet against her, so much so that she had frozen lasagnas to serve her guests. In the end, Monica doesn't "pull a Monica".
  • Call-Back: Rachel was able to get into Joanna's office was because Mark had given her the key when he quit.
  • Chained To An Office Chair: Joanna convinces Chandler to let her handcuff him to her desk chair while she attends a meeting. She slaps the cuffs on before he can properly protest. At the end of the episode he gets some revenge and leaves her handcuffed to the chair in her slip for Rachel to find.
  • Character Development: For the first time in the show, Judy very honestly acknowledges that she was mean and unfair to Monica and lets her now that she's proud of her, the start of improving relations between mother and daughter.
  • Continuity Nod: After arguing with her mother Monica goes up to her old bedroom which is full of exercise equipment. "TOW The Prom Video" had previously established that Jack and Judy were planning to turn her room into a gym.
  • Gag Penis: Rachel persuades Chandler to go back in the cuffs by promising to be "very generous" when telling Monica and Phoebe what she saw.
  • Kinky Cuffs: Joanna claims she got the handcuffs she uses on Chandler as a "gag gift" from someone, which doesn't explain why she's keeping them in her office.
  • Mystery Meat: One of Monica's fake blue nails fell into one of the quiches she baked, but she doesn't know which one. She almost flunks the catering because of this, but in the end is able to turn it around.
  • Oh, Crap!: Plenty of this on both sides when Rachel walks in on Chandler handcuffed to the chair.
  • Out of Focus: Ross notably has no involvement in any of the subplots for the episode, and only appears in the beginning and ending scenes at Central Perk.
  • Person as Verb: Judy uses "pull a Monica" to mean "screw up." Monica points out that Judy promised Monica's therapist that she would stop using those words.
  • Rapid-Fire Nail Biting: Monica's nails were already bitten, so she wears fake blue ones to disguise the fact from her mother, who would call her out on it. When Phoebe tells her she lost one, she bites the fake ones, and her mother does call her out on it.
  • Relationship Revolving Door: Rachel points out that Chandler couldn't stand Joanna the last time they went out and called her boring. Chandler says he feels he misjudged her at the time, while Joey alludes to how the two had sex this time.
  • Right Through the Wall: Joey mimics the sound of bedsprings to indicate what Chandler and Joanna were doing the night before. When Chandler comments that he's usually alone in there Joey starts making much slower squeaking sounds.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: An irritated Monica "laughs" about how Judy doesn't have any faith in her. Phoebe says she doesn't get why this is funny.
  • Street Smart: Joey correctly points out to the traveling salesman clues that he doesn't have $1200 to invest, given he's at home in the middle of the day and the state of his appartment.
  • Traveling Salesman: The encyclopedia salesman, portrayed by Penn Jillette.
