Recap / Friends S 10 E 2 The One Where Ross Is Fine

Go To

The one where Ross is Obviously Not Fine.

Ross claims to be fine after finding out about Rachel and Joey, despite all evidence pointing to near-hysteria. He invites them and Charlie to dinner in his apartment, where he proceeds to get drunk while still in a manic state. Monica and Chandler consider adoption and seek advice from a couple who went that route, but Chandler makes the mistake of telling their kid he's adopted. Phoebe's brother Frank shows up with the triplets and they are a handful to the point he asks Phoebe if she would like to take one.

Tropes:

  • Blatant Lies: Ross insists he's fine, but his behavior throughout the episode until the end shows he is decidedly NOT fine with Rachel and Joey getting together.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Frank's triplets run amok in Central Perk bothering the customers, despite him begging them to behave. The girls pick on Chandler by pulling at his shirt and throwing bagels at him, while the boy rummages through a random woman's purse.
  • The Bus Came Back: Frank hasn't been seen since Phoebe gave birth to his children, a whole five seasons ago. This is also the last time he appears in the series.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: As if Chandler revealing to Owen that he was adopted isn't bad enough, he makes a comment about Santa not being real, which adds to the kid's stress and irritates his parents even further.
  • Groin Attack: Frank Junior admits that one of the problems with having three children is that once you're using your arms to hold two of them, you have no way of stopping the third from running into your "area" with their bicycle helmet on.
  • Grossout Fakeout: When Chandler returns to Monica, Monica thinks Chandler has just used the bathroom.
    Chandler: We have to leave!
Monica: Why? What did you do in the Bathroom?!
  • Hypocrite: Ross lectures Joey and Rachel for dating each other and moving on so quickly, despite himself making the moves on Joey's ex Charlie not even seconds after she broke up with Joey.
  • Jerkass Realization: Ross has one while talking with Joey when he realizes that he and Rachel haven't been together for six years, and he shouldn't still be hung up on Rachel or feel weird about her potentially moving on with Joey. After Joey admits that his feelings for Rachel are genuine, Ross reassures Joey that they are still friends and that he will find a way to accept his and Rachel's relationship.
  • Never My Fault: Owen's parents blame Chandler for revealing to Owen that he was adopted, even though they invited Chandler and Monica to meet at their house to talk about adoption while their son was there rather than meet them at their place without Owen. Chandler also points out that they could have told him and Monica that Owen didn't know when they first got there, instead of waiting until they were about to bring him into the room.
  • Oblivious Adoption: The child of the couple Monica and Chandler visit had no idea he was adopted until Chandler casually talked to him about it.
  • Obviously Not Fine: Every time Ross says he's fine with Rachel and Joey dating it becomes less and less convincing.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Owen learns he had been adopted and freaks, Chandler urges Monica to leave before they're confronted by the parents. This fails.
  • Thought They Knew Already: Chandler and Monica are visiting a couple with an adopted child. Chandler mentions the adoption to the child, Owen, who didn't know he was adopted. Later, Chandler makes a joke to Phoebe about telling Frank Jr's triplets that Phoebe carried them...and notices the triplets are sitting within earshot. He then declares there's nothing left to do but go tell his one year-old niece that she was an accident.
  • Too Many Babies: Frank admits that he and Alice are exhausted from having to take care of the triplets. He asks Phoebe if she'd take one off their hands but can't bring himself to choose which one to give up.
